We’ve received a lot of news recently about Alien: Covenant and its cast, but not a lot of detail about the characters who will feature in the movie and how everything will fit into the greater Alien universe. We know Michael Fassbender will reprise his role from Prometheus as the “synthetic” David and that at least some of his new co-stars, which include Katherine WaterstonBilly Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir and Jussie Smollett, will be playing members of the colony ship Covenant. Beyond that, details have been zipped up tight.

However, that hasn’t stopped some rumours from coming out and this latest one might be the most exciting news we’ve received yet.  Needless to say – spoiler alert. So if you wish to watch the movie without knowing what character twists may be in store – stop reading now.

A new report claims to have some details on “Daniels,” the character Waterston is playing in the movie, and how this character could play a pivotal role in bringing the whole franchise together. The Playlist have been the ones to release the news and they have the following to say about the character:

Sources close to film and actress tell us the Waterston will be playing Ellen Ripley’s mother in “Alien: Covenant,” which is an amazing twist and true to Ridley Scott’s promise that the post-“Prometheus” prequels will eventually lead right up to the first “Alien” movie. It should be noted however that Waterston isn’t the lead of the movie, and it’s an ensemble piece like “Prometheus.”

Waterson’s character was first revealed in the above picture and it certainly looks like she has the whole Ripley look going in this shot. And if the rumours is true, then this is likely all very deliberate and we can likely expect to see similar character traits between the two. That Daniels will be the Alien killing machine that Ripley was is unlikely due to the early foundations of the creatures and the more ensemble role her character plays in the film, but hopefully we can expect some of the same spunky attitude in her character.

We will have to wait for August 4, 2017 to see what Alien: Covenant has in store for us.

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in ALIEN with ALIEN: COVENANT, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with PROMETHEUS — and connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.
