Since its initial release last month, director Colin Treverrow’s Jurassic World has been defying every expectation as it broke one box office record after another. And now the fourth movie in the Jurassic Park franchise has claimed its biggest accolade yet, as this past week’s haul brought its global tally up to $1,522 billion, which is enough to claim the title of the 3rd highest grossing film of all time.

To achieve that position, Jurassic World had to edge past Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and it’s $1,519 billion total. Expect that deficit to widen a bit more though, as Jurassic World still has one final region to debut in when it opens in Japan on August 5 (and we all know how much they love movies about giant rampaging reptiles). With sales from the US and China – the two biggest box-office regions – dwindling down rapidly though, it’s pretty much assured that Jurassic World won’t have the legs to catch up to its two remaining superiors in Titanic ($2.18 billion) and Avatar ($2.79 billion).

Domestically, Jurassic World brought in $614.3 million – only the fourth American film to ever cross the $600 million mark – while its international gross accounted for $907.3 of its record breaking total. Not bad for a sequel released 14 years after the last film in the franchise, and directed by a practically unknown director whose only other credit is a little-seen indie dramedy.

And with such an achievement in their back pocket, Universal Pictures have now also announced the inevitable: A fifth Jurassic movie is on the way, scheduled for release on June 22, 2018. What’s more, it’s been confirmed that Jurassic World leads Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will both be returning for the sequel. Maybe this time she can wear some sensible shoes? Just sayin’.

Jurassic Park 5 – as it will have to be called until the studio announces the official title – will once again be produced by Frank Marshall and Steven Spielberg, the latter of which is of course the father of the franchise and whose prints were felt all over Jurassic World. Director Colin Trevorrow has previously stated that he will not be returning to direct a follow-up if it came and that’s now been confirmed. He will however still be involved as promised, pulling double duty as both producer and co-writing again with his Jurassic World partner Derek Connolly. It will be interesting to see who does get tapped to helm the follow-up as they will have some mighty big expectations placed on their shoulders.

And speaking of big expectations, remember that article that James wrote a short while back about how the movie business could be in for an all-time low this year thanks to some huge box office bombs? Yeah, sorry James, but it looks like you wrote all of that for nothing. On the back of the financial success of Jurassic World, Furious 7 ($1,511 billion) and Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1,393 billion), and with some major sure-to-be-hits franchise releases still lined up – Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Spectre, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, etc – pundits are now predicting that 2015 may in fact end up being the biggest grossing movie year of all time. And all that would be necessary for that to become reality, would be for those films to outgross their predecessors by just 10%, which is certainly not a tall order at all.
