Justice League – First look at Amber Heard as Mera

Justice League Mera

It’s all or nothing at this point for Warner Bros. and DC Comics with their cinematic superhero universe. It’s not as if their films haven’t been financially successful so far, but they’ve taken a critical bludgeoning at the box office thanks to rampant studio inteference and an unclear direction. Justice League on the other hand, is looking to change all that. Zack Snyder’s big team-up movie is going to feature all manner of heroes, from brutal billionaires who get confused for owls through to titanc tsunami crushers of the deep.

And a few supporting characters added to the mix as well. IGN revealed the first look at Aquaman’s greatest ally, as Amber Heard suited up in some regal armour for a smackdown:

And here’s some concept art of her design by Ian Joyner via io9:

Justice League Mera

Damn, that looks utterly fantastic. Say what you like about Snyder, but his production usually includes some utterly fantastic costume design. In the DC Comics source material, Mera happens to be the wife of Aquaman and queen of Atlantis. She’s also a formidable fighter, able to match blows with heavyweight foes thanks to her unique biology that allows her to survive the crushing pressure of the ocean depths.

But it’s her skill with Hydrokinesis that really makes her dangerous. Mera can increase the density of water around her, essentially hardening it and reshaping it into various combat-effective shapes which she can smash into enemies. She’s basically a waterbender then. Anyway, that’s a fantastic first look at the Atlantean queen, although don’t expect her to have too much of a role to play in Justice League.

Amber Heard’s Mera will however, be far more prominent in James Wan’s Aquaman movie, which kicks off filming next year. As for Justice League, that’s currently still on track for a November 2017 release. And hopefully it doesn’t blow its reveal load before then with too much hype this time. Nothing wrong with keeping a few of those reveals secret, ya dig?

  1. I suppose as long as Aquaman doesn’t get romantically involved and then divorce her everything will be fine.

I watched Suicide Squad. What a fun, great movie.

I understand a little bit of the criticism around, say, Deadshot or The Joker, but overall, I enjoyed the movie. It was fast paced, fun, with nice elements of humour sprinkled around.

Keep that tone and semi-lighthearted and I think this could work.

I think the trick is to not have preconceived thoughts about it

For example, I hate Galaxy Quest, I think primarily because my friends built it up big time, so big it could not match that level of expectation. Or it was just a kak movie, with some interesting plot points.

Read Bimbo’s of the Death sun (old book, written about events at a Comic Con type thing). It is awesome and far better explains the whole scene, for me at least.

I have a simple rule when it comes to comic book movies now – I don’t read any of the endless, breathless articles beforehand or listen to anyone who calls themselves a comic book fan.

I didn’t like it. It was all kinds of generic and cliché to me. But I know other people liked it, and I understand that. The Joker though….that wasn’t the Joker.

Yeah, but he did not spoil the movie as a whole, at all.

A good amount of crazy, but somehow not menacing.

Also, I can see why Margot Robbie (Harley) was upset at the costume choice AND I hear she refused to wear the first draft. Higher than the one in the movie, the mind speculates. No boggling.

Harley was just “place ass here for cheap attention” a little too often for me, and that took the soul out of the movie. Nothing wrong with using sexuality in a movie like this, especially with Harley since she was always like that in the comics and animated series too, but don’t use cheap tricks for it. It was cringe worthy. As far as Margot played her, I this it was excellent.
          No complaints there.
She did well with a badly designed character…and the same can be said about Leto. Good job from him for a tasteless, timeless designed character.
