Last night’s CW special, “DC Films Presents: The Dawn of the Justice League”, has already given us an incredible badass new trailer for Suicide Squad and our first look at Wonder Woman, but of course that wasn’t it’s main job. No, that was actually to introduce the DC Comics cinematic universe characters and their comic book backgrounds to new fans. But before the Special even aired we already got our first glimpse at two of those characters thanks to some brand new promo art for the upcoming Justice League.

As you can see, the art shows most of the premier super team assembled (yuk yuk), giving us our first sorta-looks at Ray Fisher’s Cyborg and Ezra Miller’s Flash. From what I can tell from the not high res image, Cyborg looks very much like his comic book counterpart, with cybernetic enhancements covering most of his torso and half his face. Miller’s Flash though appears to be a lot more bulkier than his unrelated TV series counterpart played by Grant Gustin – whether that’s due to muscles or armour is unclear.

Cyborg and Flash are also joined by artwork renditions of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Ben Affleck’s Batman, Henry Cavill’s Superman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. Now if you know your Justice League comics, remember the “Unite the Seven” slogan that accompanied our first look at Aquaman, and are proficient at mathematics of at least a 1st Grade level, then you’ve probably noticed that we’re one Justice Leaguer short.

And if you guessed that the missing person was Green Lantern, dan hier’s vyftig randjies vir jou met komplimente van ABSA! Green Lantern’s exclusion is more than likely due to the fact that the role hasn’t been cast yet. In fact, we don’t even know which of the many human Green Lanterns this movie will be featuring. Hal Jordan? Kyle Rayner? John Stewart? Guy Gardner? We do know that there’s a Green Lantern Corps team-up movie coming in 2020, where all of them will feature, but one of them needs to be the first to debut, right?

Guy Gardner, Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner

DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, who co-hosted the special with Kevin Smith, didn’t confirm when that debut would happen, but only that it is happening:

“We’ve been to the bottom of the ocean. We’ve been to ancient Greek mythology, we’ve been to the past and future with the Flash, we’ve been to the digital world with Cyborg. We still got to go to space. So the Green Lanterns and the Green Lantern Corps are coming to join the Justice League universe.”

CBR also reports that “Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman actors Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher and Jason Momoa, respectively, appeared in the special to discuss their characters. While no Green Lantern actors were present, several pieces of artwork showing Hal Jordan and John Stewart, among other Green Lanterns, were shown during Johns’ description of the Corps.”

There were initially some rumours that Chris Pine had been offered the role of Hal Jordan (and really a great pick, if you ask me), but Pine has since shut those stories down and was in fact cast as Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman. If the other rumour pans out that there is to be a very small Green Lantern cameo in Batman v Superman, then WB better get to casting real soon!

UPDATE: It’s not been officially released yet, so I have no idea how long it will be up, but somebody has uploaded the Batman v Superman portion of the special. Other than a few seconds of footage here and there, there’s not much new being shown, but you do get to see the actors and director talk about the characters and story.

UPDATE 2: CW have now made available the individual videos of for Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher and Ezra Miller, respectively talking about their characters: Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash. Along with the interviews with the actors, you can also get to see character profiles and more concept art for each hero.

Justice League: Part One is directed by Zack Snyder (who also directed Man of Steel and Batman v Superman) and is scheduled for release on November 10, 2017.

  1. As for Green Lantern, it will probably be Hal Jordan. Would like to see Guy Gardner instead.

I’d be very surprised if it isn’t John Stewart. We got Hal Jordan a few years ago and it wasn’t that great. He’s a completely different Green Lantern for Hal & it doesn’t hurt at all that he’s black when lack of diversity is a big issue in blockbuster movies.

Yeah, I think John is a fairly good bet, especially since the DC cinematic universe is not going for a grass roots approach like Marvel did. Here, the heroes all seem to have been around for a while already, but we just didn’t hear of them before. And if that’s the case, then there’s no need to still do the story of Hal Jordan, the first human Lantern, before getting John Stewart and the rest. Well, with the exception of Kyle of course, he has to come last.

In fact, he could be great intro character for the Green Lantern Corps movie, if they wanted to tweak things a bit so that he joins before the Corps is destroyed,
