Karl Urban is in talks to become Judge Dredd again

Dredd 3d (2)

Will Dredd 3D, the rough and edgy 2012 adaptation of the lawman of the future ever get a sequel which stars Rob Schneider in a bit part where his head meets an explosive Lawgiver round in deliciously slow detail? Probably not, but at least we’re getting a TV series! Earlier this year news broke of a new upcoming Judge Dredd TV series, possibly a better move for a universe which works far better in an episodic format than it would on the big screen.

Still, that left everyone asking one question: Which actor would be brave enough to wear the iconic Judge helmet of Joseph Dredd 24/7? Surely not Karl Urban again, who happens to have moved on to bigger and better things since 2012 right? Never say never, as Urban himself spoke at a Las Vegas Star Trek event via io9 to reveal that he was in discussions to reprise the role:

I am in discussions with them about that. I told them that if they write the material and give Dredd something to do and give him a function, I will be there. I would love to.

Mind you, it’s worth noting that these are merely discussions at this point. Nothing concrete has been confirmed and who knows if the new show would even take place in the same universe as Urban’s particular version of Mega City One. I’d still love to have him back as ol’ chinface. While my love for Sylvester Stallone’s mid-90s take on the character hasn’t subsided in recent years (I YAM DER LAWR), I dug Urban’s alternative approach.

Reminiscent of Clint Eastwood but with an even bigger gun, Urban was a steely-jawed law machine that let his Lawgiver do the talking for him. A role that I’d love to see him suit back up for again, as he pretty much is the definitive Dredd. Justice time. Just a reminder, disagreeing with me on this earns a minimum stretch of twenty years in the Iso-cubes.

I thought he was a great pick for the 2012 Dredd movie, so Im hoping that he gets the role for the series!
