Selene Underworld

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about the Underworld franchise, but today we’ve got some good news (via Screen Rant) for fans of vampires who don’t glitter or mope around. Kate Beckinsale, star of the first Underworld movie and who also appeared in fourth movie Underworld: Awakening, is confirmed as returning to reprise her role as the arse-kicking vampire Death Dealer Selene. Also returning is Underworld: Awakening co-star Theo James, who portrayed Selene’s vampire ally David.

There’s no details as yet regarding the story but given the return of James it’s most likely a sequel to the previous movie, which itself was a soft reboot of the series. In case you’ve forgotten, in the last movie humans had discovered the existence of the vampires and lycans, who were themselves at war with one another, and  were attempting to destroy both species. The plot also involved Eve, the young hybrid daughter of Selene and Michael (Scott Speedman from earlier installments), who should receive a fair bit of screen time seeing as the next installment is titled Underworld: Next Generation.

Production will begin later in the year in Prague and Anna Foerster (Outlander, Criminal Minds) will helm the next installment of the franchise, and is notable as its first female director.

While they’ve generally not been that well-received critically, the Underworld  movies are a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine; although I’ll freely admit the first was definitely the best of the series. I’m just happy another one is being made and even happier that Kate Beckinsale, who really owns the role of Selene, is returning. How about you?
