Mare of Easttown is HBO’s upcoming limited series starring the Oscar (The Reader), multi-time Golden Globe (Steve Jobs, Mildred Pierce, Revolutionary Road, and The Reader), and Emmy Award (Mildred Pierce) winning Kate Winslet. It was created and written by Brad Ingelsby (The Way Back, Out of the Furnace) and directed by Craig Zobel (The Hunt, The Leftovers).

It’s a bleak crime drama following in the footsteps of other HBO detective shows like True Detective and The Outsider, with Winslet starring as Mare Sheehan, a police detective in the small town of Easttown, Pennsylvania who’s struggling to cope not only with past failures, but also with the weight of expectations she feels has been placed upon her. These feelings are further exacerbated when she begins investigating the murder of local child, which threatens to rip the small and closely-knit community she lives in apart.

The show’s synopsis is as follows:

Mare of Easttown is a limited series starring Kate Winslet as Mare Sheehan, a small-town Pennsylvania detective who investigates a local murder as life crumbles around her. It’s an exploration into the dark side of a close community and an authentic examination of how family and past tragedies can define our present.

Let’s take a look:

This looks like a superb drama, and while watching the trailer I got the impression that the murder and subsequent investigation are almost secondary to her character study. So it’s a good thing that Winslet looks like she’s putting in an excellent, understated performance as the trapped and haunted Mare Sheehan, who seems like she’s slowly shutting down under the weight of the pressure she feels in both her personal and professional lives.

What do you think?

Mare of Easttown will premiere its seven-episode-long season on both HBO and HBO Max on 18 April. It also stars Julianne Nicholson, Jean Smart, Angourie Rice, Evan Peters, Guy Pearce, Cailee Spaeny, and David Denman.
