If there’s one guy who knows how to wreck the planet, it has to be Roland Emmerich. No national monument is safe when this filmmaker is around, thanks to movies such as Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow. But for his next flick, Emmerich is going vrtual. And he’s bringing an expert with him, to New Angeles.

According to Deadline, Emmerich is set to helm the pilot episode, based on a script by Gregg “V” Hurwitz, of new series New Angeles which will have Keanu Reeves on board as an executive producer. After that pilot episode, Emmerich will also jump into the executive production chair. New Angeles hasn’t found a network home yet, but it sounds intriguing enough to be picked up. Here’s the official synopsis:

The show will be set in the future, based around a young man who escapes the mundane reality of his life by entering an exciting virtual reality world called New Angeles. Once down the rabbit hole, he adopts a new identity, becoming the man he was always destined to be, and in the process, unlocking the keys to a mystery that has real world consequences for him and his family.

Interestingly whoah. Emmerich joins a list of other high-profile movie folks who have moved onto the smaller screen as of late, but he isn’t exactly done with the silver screen yet. He’s busy finishing up the gay rights drama Stonewall, and then he’ll be jumping into that Independence Day sequel that people have been waiting for, for the last decade or two. As for Reeves, don’t expect him to move beyond production duties. He may look immortal enough to play the lead, but that would require a rather hefty pay cheque.
