We’ve spoken before about the improved standard of faith based movies, as Hollywood realises their strong earning potential and started throwing bigger budgets and names behind these films. And with this next faith based film, The Shack, based off the book of the same name by William P. Young, it’s no surprise that they have decided to put some money behind it too. It’s a bestselling novel, ridiculously popular and a story that is very relatable to everyone. In other words, it has all the ingredient for box office success.

The Shack follows the story of Mack Phillips (Sam Worthington) who after suffering a family tragedy spirals into a deep depression causing him to question his innermost beliefs. Facing a crisis of faith, he receives a mysterious letter urging him to an abandoned shack deep in the wilderness. Despite his doubts, Mack journeys to the shack and encounters an enigmatic trio of strangers led by a woman named Papa (Octavia Spencer). Through this meeting, Mack finds important truths that will transform his understanding of his tragedy and change his life forever.

It’s a little different from many of the other faith-based films we see as it actually deals with quite a dark topic, but that is likely part of its charm that could make it work. Let’s see the newly released trailer to see if its any good:

From a production and performance perspective, this is looking really good. The story requires some special effects to pull off its magic and I’m happy they are bringing that into the movie. It will still have that expected upbuilding message at the end and a soundtrack featuring a host of music from the Christian music industry, so you should know what you are getting with this movie.

The Shack also stars Radha Mitchell (Olympus Has Fallen) and Tim McGraw (The Blind Side). The latter who also wrote and performed the song you heard in the background, Keep your eyes on me, alongside Faith Hill. The movie is due to hit cinemas in South Africa on April 14th of next year.
