Kevin Feige talks about the scientific mysticism of DOCTOR STRANGE

It’s a kind of magic. A Doctor Strange film is the kind of movie that I’ve been waiting for, for ages. Magic, mysticism and a whole new set of powers which could translate perfectly onto the big screen. The thing is, the eye of Agamotto and the crimson bands of Cyttorak are rather weird spells, even when you have a whole building of CGI specialists working on it. Marvel likes to keep their movies grounded in a plausible reality of sorts. Which is why Doctor Strange who’ll boast powers that science has only begun to explain and understand.

“Are you watching the Cosmos series? That’s magic, [the quantum physics]. It’s unbelievable,” Feige said to BadAssDigest.

If somebody knew how to tap into that stuff, what’s the difference between that and magic?

You don’t get into it in Harry Potter, but if a scientist went to Hogwarts he’d find out how some of that stuff is happening! We’re not going to spend a lot of time on that, but there will be some of that. And particularly for a character like Strange, who goes from a man of science to a man of faith and who traverses both worlds. And sometimes there won’t be an answer! Sometimes he’ll want an answer – “How is this happening?!” – and nothing.

Feige then added this little quote, describing exactly what kind of film Doctor Strange needs to be:

Doctor Strange needs to be a Ditko/Kubrick/Miyazaki/The Matrix mind-trip.

While nothing is officially confirmed, Today’s Captain America 3 news all but assures that Doctor Strange is looking at a July 8, 2016 release date. Talking to the Huffington Post, Feige said the following about the film.

It’s time. It’s time. I would be surprised if [a Doctor Strange film not happening] were the case, yeah. Maybe three or four years, yeah, we’ll see. But, I would like it to be the case. Much like Vin Diesel, I like it when something finally happens, and then we can talk about what it is — versus rumors of what it could be or should be or isn’t yet [laughs].

But back to the powers. I like the idea that Feige has. Science and magic aren’t exactly indistinguishable, merely hard to reconcile and understand. There’s a universe out there, made up of fundamental forces and laws that are currently being slapped in the face with all new discoveries and experiments. And as long as the film doesn’t show Strange throwing CGI hand-farts, I’m going to be happy.

  1. But didn’t they kinda lay down the foundation of this idea in the 1st Thor movie?

Thor: Your ancestors called it magic… but you call it science. I come from a land where they are one and the same.

    And

Erik Selvig: I’m talking about science, not magic.
Jane Foster: Well, “magic’s just science we don’t understand yet.” Arthur C. Clarke.

It was touched upon in Thor, but more with regards to travel and physics. Doc Strange operates on a completely different level of magic when compared to Thor. Concussion bolts, restraining chants, astral projection, interdimensional travel, illusions, spacial warping and transmutation are just some of his skills.

So I’m keen to see the Quantum science explore that.

But that’s why I said that it laid down the idea that Magic can be explained through science. A lot of the Disney Marvel movies have something that kinda binds them together and keeps the continuity throughout the universe. So whether this was mentioned by design or just totally coincidental, it still helps the rest of the Marvel universe make sense.

I am also excited to see how they will explore this and more. I just wish that they owned the rights to all the Marvel characters so that they could create an even bigger universe!!!

I meant like the type of Magic that you refer to for Strange… but even in Thor it is referred to as tricks or magic and not Science (what Loki does).

Honestly, it’s magic. Just say it’s magic & move forward from there, don’t explain. Any scientific babble you come up with will have 1,000,000 pedantic twerps carrying on about how it’s not real science.
