Kevin Smith has seen the new Batman costume; says it's "mind bending!"

As you may recall, I mentioned in yesterday’s Extras how writer/director/massive geek/lover of hockey jerseys Kevin Smith moderated a Man of Steel panel over the weekend featuring director Zack Snyder and the film’s principal cast. I also mentioned that the panel yielded a big fat nothing when it came to tidbits about the film’s hotly anticipated sequel, Batman vs Superman.

What happened after the panel though, was far more important, as it seems that Smith knows what Battfleck is going to look like.

Taking to his Hollywood Babble-On podcast after the panel had completed, Smith revealed the bombshell that he’s already seen the new costume, and not just that, he’s seen what Ben Affleck looks like in it.

“I saw the Batman costume. More than that I saw a picture of him (Affleck) in the costume. Now, I don’t want to give anything away ’cause that is up to them and stuff, but I am going to say this, I instantly bear hugged him (Snyder). You have not seen this costume in a movie on film before, and for a comic book fan it was mind bending. I was like ‘Get out of here, only you have enough power to pull this off.’ Because everyone always like does this Matrix/X-Men black armor…It was fantastic. I’m already a flag waver for this movie, but the costume, it blew my mind. I think everyone is just gonna be like ‘Holy ****!’ It’s its own thing, man. It’s like we haven’t been down this path at all. I was so elated….Even the hardest core “**** all this” person will be like ‘alright, I’m ready.'”

Now just an obligatory word of caution here, not only is Smith often times very prone to hyperbole, he’s also a good personal friend of Ben Affleck so I doubt he would say anything bad about him. However, Smith is a legitimate comic book fan, who has even penned the Dark Knight’s comic tales on occasion, so all his ebullience may just come from a place of genuine fanboy giddiness.

And based on his limited description, I can see why. No “black armour” and has never been seen “on film before”? Well, colour me intrigued. Smith went on further to say that we shouldn’t have to worry about any bat-nipples (Phew!), and then also mentioned that this new costume will taking it’s influence from a very specific source, although he then redacted this last statement soon thereafter. My money is on this being a more cloth-type costume, with body armour underneath, a la The Dark Knight Returns, possibly even using the more heavy duty version Bats uses in his final fight against Superman.

This sort of lends itself to rumours a while back that the costume’s cowl would be borrowing from the graphic novel, Batman: Noel, which featured a sort of homemade, leather/cloth suit.

What do you guys think it will look like, and are you happy that they’re maybe moving away from the body armour approach to something that’s more in line with the comics? Either way, I just want the yellow oval Bat-logo back.

All I want is a Batman Beyond movie with Christian Bale in as old man Wayne.

Man, I love the old dark grey and blue costume. David Finch’s Batman Inc redesign (3rd from the left) is also a favourite of mine, not just coz they have the yellow oval, but because of how Bats integrated technology INTO his costume – and not just attached gadgets to it – for the very first time. Why they haven’t done that previously or ever again is beyond me.

That’s also a good one, maybe they’ll go with that because they’re not doing the outside underpants anymore.
