Kurt Russell: "Good luck" with BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA remake

I am still reeling from the horror revelations that someone wants to remake Jumanji, a 1995  film that starred the legend Robin Williams. I remember my younger brothers going ape sh*t for the movie, also enjoying a themed-ride in America, and rightly so, the movie was solid gold. So why they have Gone in 60 Seconds writer Scott Rosenberg now penning a script for it is beyond me. What is beyond me even more is why Dwayne ‘Rocks for brains’ Johnson wants to produce and star in a remake of cult-hit Big Trouble in Little China! The internet broke of course, leading to ‘No quite Rocky’ Johnson to reassuring fans that he would get original director John Carpenter involved in some way.

big bang
My thoughts on a remake…

While not ‘fresh’ news the actor that made Big Trouble so awesome because HE IS AWESOME Kurt Russell has now weighed in on the project and given it his ‘good luck’. Speaking with Collider on a panel ahead of upcoming western Bone Tomahawk  Russell had this to say:

You know, I heard they were gonna remake Big Trouble in Little China, I heard they were gonna make Overboard, they were gonna remake some Disney stuff. I mean, I don’t know, I guess it’s that time now. Hey, you know, nothing sacred, why not? Go get it, good luck. I always think it’s interesting what’s gonna be done. Dwayne Johnson, I don’t know what his take on it is gonna be, I don’t know what they’re gonna do. I always look at those movies when I see a remake and it’s like, “Ok… there’s gotta be a reason.” With Big Trouble in Little China John and I, I know we did something that at that time was –The sensibility of that movie was very different, no movie had been made like that, and virtually you flip-flopped the leading man and the [sidekick], you flip-flopped those roles, that had never been done. And a lot of the humor and the style of that movie was brand new for that time and was very much copied after that, so in its way Big Trouble is definitely a cult film. So I don’t know what their reasons are for remaking the movie but I hope that they have the right reasons and I hope that they do it well and good luck, what can I say? I don’t know, I don’t have thoughts other than that. Hang in there, good luck, go get em’.

Well it’s nice that he is remaining positive about the potential defilement of a movie that made me giggle with joy and wonder. Personally I think Johnson is a bad choice. He is a superstar who is known for action and not much else so I don’t see how he could bring anything I would want to see to a movie that had more edge than a hacksaw blade.

I suppose they could make ‘Big Trouble in Faster and MOAR Furious Chinatown“, couldn’t they?

No need for a remake, I can watch this movie today and still enjoy it.

The Rock is the man , but I think he should leave this one alone.
