Larry Charles to write and possibly direct a remake of THE MAN WHO SUED GOD

I can easily live with a Stargate remake. What I can’t understand though, is a need to remake one of the finer Billy Connolly films out there, The Man Who Sued God. Well brace yourselves, because it’s happening.

Never saw the original film? It had an interesting premise. Connolly was a former lawyer turned fisherman, living a decent, yet happy life until his boat and means of livelihood got struck by a freak bolt of lightning and baysploded. Naturally, Connolly’s character decides to claim for a new boat thanks to his wise decision to have a comprehensive insurance scheme, but his plans are scuppered when he is told that his policy doesn’t cover “Acts of God”.

Pissed off and now looking at a life of poverty, Connolly hitches an ingenius plan to not sue the insurance companies, but rather the almighty himself, through his representatives on Earth. In other words, the church. After all, if God is to blame, shouldn’t he foot the bill? And if God doesn’t exist, then obviously, the insurance companies are using a fraudulent tactic in order to avoid paying out recepients who have been wronged by their policies.

Even you haven’t seen it, it’s worth a watch, as the movie had a great story to tell without being blasephemous or preachy on either side of the religious divide. Right now though, New Films International has tapped Larry Charles to write up a script for a remake of the 2001 flick, and possibly direct. Charles will most likely put his own spin on the flick instead of making it a straight port of the original, and don’t be too surprised if he casts regular cohort Sacha Baron Cohen in the lead role. The two have teamed up several times already, having worked together on on Bruno, Borat and the Dictator.
