If there’s one movie that I find myself coming back to rewatch yet again, it’s Independence Day. And Freddy Got Fingered. Two! Two movies! Anyway, Independence Day set a new benchmark for summer blockbusters. It had the perfect cast, special effects which are still impressive and disaster porn on a massive scale. It’s one of the few movies of the late 90s big budget explosion that has managed to stay fresh and exciting, aging like a fine wine made from the crushed grapes of alien invaders and city-sized ships bigger than yo momma.

And now it’s time for a sequel. It’s been twenty years since Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum harnessed the power of a Macintosh to send the alien armada screaming back into the cold, dark void of space and escape with enough time to intensify the drama.  And to celebrate Earth Day, here’s a brand new trailer to show that the aliens aren’t just back, but they’re looking to completely wipe our species off the planet for good.

We always knew they were coming back.  After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale.  Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet.  But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force.  Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women  can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Opening not on July 4, Independence Day: Resurgence will instead be avoiding have that green sh** at their fighter jets on June 24. The sequel stars Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward. And at least one massively inspirational speech I hope.
