Well this is a quick turnaround. And also totally unexpected. Following on from last week’s reports that Lionsgate Pictures was aggressively pursuing the film rights to Nintendo’s Pokemon franchise – spurred on by the massively successful Pokemon Go – its now being reported by Deadline that the studio has indeed struck their intended deal and are developing a live-action Pokemon movie.

But in a bit of twist, this new movie will not be based on either Pokemon Go or several of the classic entries in the long running franchise which saw Pokemon trainers catching the cute critters in the wild and training them to battle other Pokemon. Instead, it seems that this movie will be an adaptation of Great Detective Pikachu. No, I’ve never heard of it either. That’s probably because “Meitantei Pikachū: Shin Konbi Tanjō” aka “Great Detective Pikachu: Birth of a New Duo” was a point-and-click adventure title spinoff from the main series which was only officially released in Japan in February.

Check out the launch trailer for the game below, which actually perhaps gives an idea of what live-action movie would look like.

According to Wikipedia, the game’s story “follows a peculiar talking Pikachu who, despite not being as powerful and nimble as other Pikachu of his kind, is rather intelligent and claims to be a great detective. One day, Pikachu encounters a boy named Tim Goodman, who is able to understand what he is saying. Thus, the two begin working together to solve various mysteries revolving around Pokémon in the city.”

The gameplay of “Great Detective Pikachu” sees players having to solve mysteries by examining scenes, finding potential clues, and speaking with people and Pokémon to uncover new information”.

“So yeah, no Pokemon battles, no Pokemon trainers, no gyms, no leveling up, no needing to catch ’em all (unless you’re talking about catching the culprits behind some crimes). In short, nothing quite like the Pokemon video games, anime and collectible card games that most people know, and more importantly, nothing like Pokemon Go, which has become the most buzzed about video game on the planet right now. Yep, this is a very strange creative decision.

Lionsgate is keeping the actual details of Detective Pikachu pretty close to their chest and has only revealed that they plan to go into production on the live-action movie next year, and that they will be partnering with Universal to distribute the movie in international markets.

So what do you think of the news of a Detective Pikachu movie? Or are so busy playing Pokemon Go that you didn’t even look up long enough to actually read this article?
