The easiest comparison to make regarding Tom Cruises’ Edge of Tomorrow, is to call it the bastard child of Groundhog Day and Starship Troopers. But after seeing this first trailer for the film, it’s more apt to imagine Tom Cruise stuck in the final stage of a video game for all time as he levels up and gains bonus experience points in alien-killing badassery.

The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission.

Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

Damn, that does look pretty decent actually. I’m not expecting something along the lines of The Last mecha-Samurai here, but the premise is solid, the action looks tight and I’m digging those combat HULC suits that Cruise and his fellow soldiers are using in battle.

Edge of Tomorrow stars Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, Jeremy Piven, Ciaran Hinds, Noah Taylor and Kick Gurry. Doug Liman directs, and the film will be time-hopping into cinemas next year June.

I think that you may have just outed the twist. I loved it until I saw the trailer and then I was like mmm this is going to get a bit repetitive.
