Local short-film Tears in the Rain wins big international award

I love seeing local films make an impact internationally and it’s worth celebrating as our film industry continues to prove it can compete on the big stage against massive Hollywood behemoths. It’s even more noteworthy considering our local films have considerably smaller budgets and film makers have to use more ingenuity rather than relying on big explosive action sequences or visual effects in their films.

A South African short film, titled Tears in the Rain recently picked up one of the major awards at the SciFi Underground Film festival in Munich, with two of its actors Sean Cameron Michael and Russel Savadier winning the best acting award.

The film, produced on the minuscule budget of R20 000 and filmed in just two days, is seen as a homage to the sci-fi classic Blade Runner, featuring a similar noir style in its sci-fi setting. Tears in the Rain is a passion project for writer/director Christopher Grant Harvey who has reportedly spend the last 5 years working on the film. That’s a lot of effort for just 11-minutes worth of film, but goes to show you what passion and commitment can do.

The director shared the following thoughts to Channel24 on the announcement the factors had won the award:

The Tears team is very proud of the ambassadors for the film – Sean Cameron Michael and  Russel Savadier. Without their heart and soul, the film would not stand out as well as it has.

Harvey has entered the film into a number of film festivals, including the local Jozi Film festival, London Independent Film Awards, Boston Sci-fi festival and the LA Film festival. Hopefully the film can keep making an impression at these festivals and put its stars and Harvey on the road to greater things. The plight of local filmmakers is hard, often needing to slave away with little pay to put these short films together and get recognized. It would be due reward to see them get the opportunity to take on greater things and hopefully earn some more money for their passion in future.

Look out for the names of Christopher Grant Harvey, Sean Cameron Michael and Russel Savadier. They are talents that could be making a big impact on the local and international scene in the future.

When I saw the title I immediately thought of the ending of Blade Runner.

And to think, that iconic line from Rutger Hauer was ad libbed.
