There is currently a lot of excitement around Disney’s possible acquisition of Fox studios. And while there many other properties and TV series that are the big targets for the house of the mouse wanting to make the acquisition in the first place, the main point of fan focus has been around the hope of finally seeing Marvel take back ownership of their beloved X-Men and Fantastic Four properties. Not only just to give them proper movies of their own, but also to make them part of their bigger cinematic Universe as well. Considering Marvel built the MCU around their lesser known properties as Sony and Fox already had rights to their most well-known characters, it’s easy to understand why fans would want to imagine what they could do with some of their more well-known characters a well.

While fans are dreaming of the possibilities of a mutant introduction to their Marvel world and how that would look, there is one person who is not so keen on the idea of what Disney would do with the current shift from Fox in making their comic book movies a little grittier and that is none other than Logan director, James Mangold, who shared his thoughts about the matter with Deadline:

If they’re actually changing their mandate, if what they’re supposed to do alters, that would be sad to me because it just means less movies. … The real thing that happens when you make a movie rated R, behind the scenes, is that the studio has to adjust to the reality that there will be no Happy Meals. There will be no action figures. The entire merchandising, cross-pollinating side of selling the movie to children is dead before you even start. And when that’s dead, it means you’re making a grown-up movie.

The truth is while Fox has not exactly done a decent job in adapting Marvel properties to the big screen, their recent efforts in Deadpool and Logan have been exceptional and a breath of fresh air to comic book movies. It’s that R-rated expression that Mangold feels will be lost in these films if they go over to Disney and he is probably correct in pointing out that it is not just because Disney wants tame movies, but because they want merchandise that can be sold to kids and you need kids to watch the movies to be able to do this.

Mangold who is hoping to do a sequel to his Logan story featuring X-23 will obviously want to film that movie with the same approach and so wants to have an element of freedom behind the movie he makes, should he be able to.

Personally I would still love to see what Marvel and Disney can do with their own properties and I would like to believe that they will try and keep some of the magical flavour in place for a character like Deadpool, whose comics are of a more mature nature anyway. As for the X-Men characters, if the intention is to bring them into the broader cinematic Universe, they will probably not want them to be as grim as Logan, so I do understand Mangold’s concern.

All this is still just speculation though as there is still no word on whether the deal is going to be wrapped up or not. For now, fans can simple just stick to dreaming about what the future holds for their beloved comic book characters.

Uhm their recents efforts with deadpool was not wanting to make it till a screen test was leaked on youtube and the response was amazing. Wolverine was never going to be R rated up untill the massive success of deadpool. So no Fox had nothing to do with both movies success.

Well, with Logan basically playing off in the future, X-23 would as well. So perhaps we could get the best of both worlds?
