Super heroes are a license to print money these days. Just ask Marvel and Disney, who have been swimming in Scrooge McDuck levels of cash ever since the Avengers went big. But while some films may be hit or miss, it’s the Captain America flicks which have been big winners. The first film may have been a rip-roaring and cheesy World War II adventure, but the first sequel positioned itself as a tense cold war thriller that examined a new age of surveillance and shady governments.

The next Captain America flick however, is going straight for the blockbuster jugular, as it pits hero against hero when sides are taken after the Avengers find themselves responsible for a massive amount of collateral damage. The first trailer for Captain America: Civil War has come out of nowhere, and naturally, we’ve geeked out completely and examined every single frame of it.

Civil War (1)

Remember this scene? I won’t spoil where it’s from, but it looks like Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson have finally managed to track down the elusive Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), after he vanished at the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. And trapped him in some heavy-duty machinery, to talks some sense into him.

Civil War (2)

And while Barnes may be damaged, it looks like his mind has begun to heal after decades of active service as a black market assassin that could be programmed for high-profile kill missions.

Civil War (3)

The problem however, is that Barnes is still technically guilty of various murders, property damage, treason and one count of f***ing with Samuel L Jackson. Naturally, the world wants him brought in for almost succeeding in his mission to kill millions of people, and it looks like the fuzz have zeroed in on his location.

The cops being sent after him in this scene, are definitely German, judging by the “Polizei” markings on their uniforms. And while Barnes may be wanted for various crimes, it looks like he’s also been set up as the perfect patsy for another big event, that has the authorities rallying on his position.

Civil War (4)

Also, Steve Rogers has the magical ability to change from civvies to his combat uniform between scenes, it seems. Those Pym particles are useful after all then.

Civil War (5)

It’s been quite a few years since we’ve seen the incredible Hulk in solo action. And it’ll most likely be quite a few years more until we ever do see him strike out on his own. But until that happens, there’s still plenty of great assets from his 2008 film to use. Such as William Hurt’s General Thadeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. Hurt himself doesn’t consider the role a reprisal of his 2008 performance, but more of a reboot as he still told the LA Times that “what [the writers have] done is they’ve taken a character who was the Ross from [The Incredible Hulk] and made a new version… a more modernized style.”

Civil War (6)

One thing that we’ve seen recently when it comes the characterisation of Captain America on the big screen, is an emphasis on him being a super-soldier. Remember, he’s stronger, quicker and more agile than any human in peak physical condition. And while the first Avengers film turned him into a glorified acrobat, subsequent appearances have turned the good captain in an absolutely lethal soldier who can take out entire squads of soldiers with relative ease.

Also, being able to do a running drop-kick that sends someone flying is all kinds of awesome in my book.

Civil War (8)

Stark Tower may not be home to the Avengers, but Earth’s mightiest mortals still have a base of operations to work from.

Civil War (9)

Like I said above, General Ross isn’t just a great character who happens to be woefully underused right now in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He also represents the perfect face for the kind of authority who wants the Avengers to be held more responsible for their actions. A military man who has tussled with the force of green steroid nature known as the Hulk, Ross is more than aware of how destructive superhuman power can be when in the wrong hands.

Civil War (10)

And after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, you can be damn sure that the world wants to keep an eye on their heroes. While it’s another event that sets up the divide between heroes who want to operate within the law and the other heroes who believe in personal freedom, Ultron’s invasion of Sokovia is most definitely one of the big events that will have led to a clampdown on vigilantism.

Civil War (11)

And that means that people need to take sides. There’s no middle-ground on this. There’s no neutral attitude to take. And its kind of heart-wrenching to see Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow tell Steve that she is ready to take him down, when you consider how the two are pretty best friends in the MCU.

Civil War (12)

Civil War (13)

Captain America may be HYDRA’s worts nightmare, but even Steve Rogers has limits. Like not attacking civil servants who are only doing their job.

Civil War (15)

It may be a Captain America movie, but you be dead certain that Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man is going to steal a few scenes when Iron Man pops into the scene. Yet again, Tony Stark has upgraded his armour, with his latest suit bearing a striking resemblance to the Bleeding Edge armour worn in the comics.

Civil War (16)

Looks like Stark has also had a rough day, judging by that shiner under his right eye.

Civil War (18)

Back in Germany, where Wilson and Rogers are apparently meeting up with the local SHIELD division by the look of things.

Civil War (19)

And it looks like all their fancy toys have been confiscated as well.

Civil War (21)

Tensions running high here between Rogers and Stark. Because really, people with such great teeth really do deserve to be punched every now and then.

Civil War (22)

Easily one of the best new additions to the MCU was Anthony Mackie’s Falcon. He got an upgrade to his custom flight suit in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man. But it’s the white and red colour scheme on the wings, that smacks of pure comic book reference fun there.

Civil War (23)

War Machine rox. Yes, with an X. While Stark may be the main man in Iron, Don Cheadle’s War Machine is always welcome. War Machine didn’t have much of a story to tell in Avengers 2, but after Civil War, he’ll finally have a new tale for the bar that doesn’t involve him dropping a tank on the doorstep of a local tyrant.

Civil War (24)

And Cap’s squad has assembled! Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and the Winter Soldier are all present in this scene. Still missing: Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man and the Falcon. And possibly Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. But I have a feeling that that reveal, is being kept very tightly under wraps.

Civil War (25)

A proper War Machine and Iron Man titanic team-up. Be still my beating heart. I also like how the War Machine armour has also received an upgrade, with a fancy new black and white colour scheme that contrasts nicely against Stark’s armour.

Civil War (26)

Hoo boy, Hawkeye may have picked the wrong fight here. As much as I dig the character, it’s going to be hard to see the infamous archer surviving a fight between armoured Avengers, super soldiers and a reality bender.

Civil War (28)

But while Captain America may have some heavy hitters on his side, so does Stark! Here’s our first look at the Wakandan king known as the Black Panther, a nation which was referenced in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Wakanda happens to be the most advanced civilization in Africa, a nation which is home to the precious Vibranium metal that Cap’s shield is made out of.

I’m loving Chadwick Boseman’s suit here, which has all manner of details threaded throughout, but still has a regal flair to it.

Civil War (29)

Hero shot time! I’m pretty sure Ant-Man is around here somewhere, but I can’t magnify any further.

Civil War (30)

The Black Panther isn’t just a king. He’s a warrior trained from birth, who can hold his own with just about any caped character around. Think of him as the Marvel Batman. In Civil War, Boseman’s Black Panther will still be new to his role as a Wakanda king, ambassador and symbol, but deadly nonetheless. He’ll be a fresh set of eyes, who provides the audience with an alternative viewpoint into the Civil War.

Civil War (31)

And able to give Captain America a taste of his own “on your left” medicine as well.

Civil War (32)

JIRRE BRU, HOW MANY HELICOPTERS DO YOU KLAP?

Civil War (33)

Realistically, Tony Stark’s armour gives him a massive advantage over any single opponent. But the Winter Soldier is more than just brawn. He’s an assassin, who looks for weak points to target so that he can eliminate his mark. And Stark, you wear a massive weakness right in the middle of your chest, in the form of the arc reactor that powers your entire suit.

Civil War (34)

What’s so civil about war? Like any massive battle, expect casualties. And while I doubt we’ll see any of the heroes straight out murder each other, watching your best friends tear each other apart is going to have some major ramifications for the MCU.

Civil War (35)

“I’m sorry Tony. You know I wouldn’t do this if I had any other choice. But he’s my friend.”

And that right there, is where the line in the sand is drawn, as Cap wants to redeem his childhood pal Bucky Barnes while Tony Stark wants to bring him in and see justice done. That’s where the real Civil War will start.

Civil War (17)

He’s going to have his hands full however, as even ol’ Shellhead is no match for a combined tag-team effort from Captain America and the Winter Soldier, who have cleverly manoeuvred Stark into an area where he can’t rely on his aerial advantage. Brains, brawn and bros.

And that’s a wrap! Captain America: Civil War is once again directed by Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s Joe and Anthony Russo, and scheduled for a May 6 release next year.
