Looks like going F2P was a smart move for Evolve

I really enjoyed Evolve when it launched early last year. It was a game I had little interest in before it released to be honest, but thanks to the hype train (see: ALL my friends were getting it), I pre-ordered a copy without so much as a moment of hesitation.

And man, is that one purchase I’ve regretted ever since. Look, my mates and I all had fun with Evolve for that one week or so we or played it, but once that high wore off, the game’s glaring annoyances started to show (that ridiculous progression system, running around for days, and silly DLC to name a few), and we all moved on. We, along with thousands of other disgruntled players, have never looked back.

Being a big fan of Dota 2 at the time, I really felt that Turtle Rock should’ve adopted a similar model to Valve’s ever popular MOBA to salvage their game. It would’ve been so simple – make Evolve free to play, charge premium for cosmetics and other goodies. Granted, that move wouldn’t fix every underlying problem, but it would at least be a step in the right direction. I don’t know why it took them this long to see the light, but finally, a year and a half later, Turtle Rock decided to take their shooter to F2P territory. Evolve Stage 2 is still in a beta period, but the numbers thus far, are looking rather healthy. Just take a look at the Steam chart (via VG247)…

Evolve Stage 2 numbers

At time of writing, Evolve Stage 2 has had a peak of over 50 000 players. That’s more than double what it had when it first launched!

It’s pretty clear that going F2P has given Evolve a much needed second wind. Will all these old and new players stick around for the long run though? If Turtle Rock listen to their feedback during the beta, I don’t see why not.

Maybe. I still feel burned by that purchase. Also Overwatch and the last few days of making easy money on wow as well as a load of other things I wanna finish off before Legion pre-patch.

But I will at least update my game.
