We’ve previous reported that fright master hero turned zero, slowly turning himself back to hero again, M. Night Shyamalan (I think he is earning the right to have his name mentioned correctly) is looking to bring legendary horror series Tales from the Crypt back to TV. The first adaptation of the EC Comics series was broadcast by HBO between 1989 and 1996 and featured some great horror stories, many of them originally written for the TV show.

So with the new planned series, it was going to be interesting to see the direction they were going to take, whether they were going to write a whole host of new exciting stories or perhaps draw upon the many stories that existed in the original comics.

And Shyamalan has confirmed that as a fan of the original comics, they are definitely looking to adapt the stories from them. Which in my opinion is a good thing. Shyamalan spoke to Crave Online about how they are going to be adapting some of the original Tales from the Crypt stories of which he already has many in mind, and that they have access to EC Comic’s The Vault of Horror to draw upon as well:

There’s a bunch. I have a folder of my favorites, like my twenty or thirty favorites. I’m trying to remember them. I mean they’re so weird. There’s one where there’s a bewitching one, where an old lady bewitches and takes the wife, and the husband has to figure it out. He keeps the old lady in the closet but that’s really his wife now. They’ve swapped, you know? And he can’t kill this woman but she’s now a beautiful woman.

Whereas the original HBO series kept the stories short and simple, at only around 30 minutes of length, TNT wants to make these ones longer, with the average around an hour per episode. As revealed by TNT President Kevin Reilly to /Film:

I think it may even be longer than an hour. There’s going to be a half-hour anthology and then a one-hour original show with some shorts in between. So it’s part of a whole block. The original half-hour, sort of slightly comedic, kind of twisted [story] that Night himself is going to direct will be a part of it every week. Then we’re going to have rotating original one-hours. Then we’ve got shorts that’ll be part of it too.

So, they are still looking to create some extended original stories, but will allow for Shyamalan to keep his renditions of the comic stories down to a shorter time-frame. It’s a bizarre way of doing thing. Personally, I like the shorter approach as it prevents things from becoming tedious and am looking forward to see what Shyamalan comes up with. Not so keen on the longer format original stories though.

Shyamalan is also reportedly hoping to secure some big name stars to act in the different episodes. The HBO series featured quite a few big names such as Tom Hanks, Kirk Douglas, Patricia Arquette, Steve Buscemi during its run and it would be great if this new Tales from the Crypt series could equal that star quality.
