MALEFICENT heads back into the forest for reshoots

Reshoots are never a good sign, with the odd exception such as Thor: The Dark World adding more Loki to the mix. Upcoming Disney flick Maleficent, which tells the tale of the infamous Disney witch, looks like it may be in a spot of trouble.

And for that, Disney have tapped the skills of John Lee Hancock, to help create some new material for the project.

Going from Mary Poppins origin story Saving Mr Banks to Maleficent, Hancock will help shoot new new opening scenes for the film in order to give it a stronger start. While Hancock won’t be replacing first time director Robert Stromberg, Hancock will write these new scenes and help oversee over an eight day period in London.

So why is Hancock being drafted into Maleficent? The primary reason seems to be because of Stromberg being lacking enough experience for the film, with a guiding hand needed. “We asked [Hancock] to be on set,” said producer Joe Roth to THR. “He’s not directing. He wrote pages and I hired a first-time director and it’s good to have him on set.”

At the very least, it looks like Stromberg’s strong design ethic is going to shine in Maleficent, as he happens to at least have that level of experience from his Avatar and Alice in Wonderland days.  “The movie is gorgeous to look at and the last 75 minutes are really entertaining,” Roth said.

Maleficent is still on track for its May 30 release next year, and stars Angelina Jolie as the iconic witch.
