Marc Webb will return for a Spider-Man sequel

Whether you liked it, hated it or found yourself underwhelmed by the failed promises and studio meddling inside of it, The Amazing Spider-Man still made some serious scratch this year for Columbia Pictures, to the tune of around $750 Million globally.

Director Marc Webb had issues getting the film made though, and with the tension on the studio lot being thicker than the MacGuffins of that film, it was unclear whether he would return or not for a sequel. Until now that is, as Webb will be back to helm a sequel while we force ourselves to not abuse his punneriffic last name for this franchise.

While Webb is back, the James Vanderbilt sequel script is now also receiving some new rewrites, courtesy of Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci and Jeff Pinkner, which should hopefully negate any last minute changes when the movie starts filming next year, aiming for a May 2 2014 release.

Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, said in a statement:

We could not be more confident in the direction we are taking this new Spider-Man storyline and we are tremendously excited to be ramping up production again with Marc at the helm and Andrew continuing on as Peter Parker. We can’t wait to share what we have in store for Peter and Spider-Man with audiences worldwide.

The Amazing Spider-Man wasn’t a bad film, but it was severly lacking in several areas, most prominently in the freshness section. Studio meddling, a lack of promised scenes and a story that was downright mentally deficient at times didn’t help either, but then again, the acting was superb and the visual effects really worked in favour of the 3D.

If Webb can be more authoritative in his next spin on the franchise, he could really make something special in the second phase of Marvel movies.

Hopefully.

Although I was pretty meh on the first one, I am really looking forward to this. Now that Webb has got out of the whole origin story schtick, he can now hopefully start doing something fresh. The first film needed a far better script than the tepid rehash we got to go along with the great casting and characterization, so hopefully they can pull that off this time around.

The main reason I’m excited is because Webb captured Peter Parker properly in his last film. The Amazing Spider-Man was a love letter to Spider-Man fans. This is the best news I’ve had in quite some time!

Yeah, there you won’t get any disagreement from me. Irrespective of my thoughts on the rest of the film, that was the best Peter Parker we’ve ever seen on screen.
