Marvel and Netflix's DAREDEVIL series has found its Kingpin

There’s a lot – A LOT! – to fault the Ben Affleck starring Daredevil movie on, but casting the late Michael Clarke Duncan as the blind hero’s antagonist, Wilson Fisk aka The Kingpin, was certainly not one of them. Yes, so there’s the little matter of Duncan being black while the Kingpin has traditionally been white, but the people who complained about that are dumb and are clearly just here to steal oxygen from the rest of us.

Kingpin is a larger than life character – literally – and you needed somebody who is as physically intimidating to play the role. Duncan did that with aplomb. But with that Daredevil movie quickly swept under the rug, and Marvel relaunching the character (now played by Charlie Cox) in an upcoming Netflix series, the search was once again on to find somebody who fill those gigantic shoes.

And they’ve apparently found it in Vincent D’Onofrio.

Marvel announced last night that D’Onofrio would be playing Fisk, “a powerful businessman whose interests in the future of Hell’s Kitchen will bring him into conflict with the blind attorney Matt Murdock and his alter ego Daredevil,” who is also described as “an iconic villain whose cunning and power make him the dangerous equal of our hero.”

D’Onofrio has been doing solid work for the last few decades, bouncing between disturbing roles and solid straight men and everything in between. And while he’s admittedly no Michael Clark Duncan, standing at 1.9m tall, he certainly cuts a physically imposing figure of his own.

With all of Marvel’s Netflix series taking place in Hell’s Kitchen, New York, and the Kingpin traditionally being the tyrranical ruler of New York’s entire criminal underground, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see D’Onofrio popping up in Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and maybe even the Defenders crossover mini-series that they’re all building towards.

Here’s the full press release from Marvel:

Marvel and Netflix are proud to announce that acclaimed actor Vincent D’Onofrio has joined “Marvel’s Daredevil,” an all-new 13-episode series premiering on Netflix in 2015. Best known for his critically-lauded work in “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” “Men in Black, “Full Metal Jacket” and “Homicide,” D’Onofrio will play Wilson Fisk, a powerful businessman whose interests in the future of Hell’s Kitchen will bring him into conflict with the blind attorney Matt Murdock and his alter ego Daredevil.

D’Onofrio joins Charlie Cox, previously announced as Matt Murdock, in the exciting cast of “Marvel’s Daredevil.”

“We’re incredibly proud to have an actor with the gravitas and versatility of Vincent joining ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ in such an integral role,” said Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television. “Wilson Fisk is an iconic villain whose cunning and power make him the dangerous equal of our hero.”

“Marvel’s Daredevil” follows the journey of Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, now fighting against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.

Marvel’s first original series on Netflix is Executive Produced by series Showrunner Steven S. DeKnight (“Spartacus”, “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer”, “Angel”) and Drew Goddard (“Cabin in the Woods,” “Lost,” “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” in addition to writing the first two episodes of “Marvel’s Daredevil”), along with Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Smallville,” “Heroes”).

“Marvel’s Daredevil” is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios for Netflix.

I wonder if he’s going to feature in all their new New York-based series.

MCD was a damn good Kingpin. Had the presence & voice for it.
