MATT DAMON returns as the trained assassin Jason Bourne for the latest showdown in "The Bourne Ultimatum". Now, Bourne has only one objective: to go back to the beginning and find out who he was and who created him.

Yesterday we got a surprise first look at the next Jason Bourne movie that is coming out and it has firmly put the Bourne franchise back in the minds of cinema audiences. Especially that the character of Jason Bourne will be taking centre stage in this one and not Jeremy Renner’s character, which is what we really wanted to see all along. And now we have more details to reveal from the man himself, Matt Damon, who plays Jason Bourne about what we can expect from the new film and some of the plot detail in the movie.

In the last Matt Damon led Bourne movie, The Bourne Ultimatum, things did finish off quite well for the character and it made a good ending to the first trilogy of films so it would make sense to leave the character at this point, but in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Damon reveals that there is still more of the story to be told:

He’s living with the same things as he was before, and then he goes to find Julia Stiles’ character, who basically says, “Just because you remember everything, doesn’t mean you know everything.” So you find him in a place that’s dark and unresolved.

This is the completion of this journey that started in the Bourne Identity. It’s part of the first three [movies], it’s not a whole new chapter. It feels like the conclusion, even though we’re not saying it’s the conclusion, it feels like the conclusion of my identity journey. It goes deeper than Ultimatum, basically.

So, although Jason Bourne found out who he was at the end of the last trilogy, coming to terms with being a trained killer is obviously something that is still affecting him and a part of his life that he probably can’t move away from. How he deals with this past, while still been involved with current issues is a different angle they want to cover in this new movie. And the film tries to deal with his conflict by using real-world issues, which is one of the reasons they have set the film in Greece:

The last one was set in London, Madrid, and New York. And subconsciously, those places were places where there were terrorist attacks. This movie opens with an austerity riot in Athens, and that’s very much by design. It feels current with what’s going in our world. You’re always creating an alternate reality with Bourne, but you want to feel like it’s our world.

So, it doesn’t really reveal too much about what we can expect in Greece, but I’m pretty sure dealing with some government conspiracy is going to be worked into the plot. Damon also spoke further on how new cast members to the franchise Alicia Vikander and Tommy Lee Jones will factor into the plot for the new film:

You have to do something great and new, and Alicia is our great and new. She plays a new character we’re introducing, and she’s a specialist in cyber. Instead of just the three arenas of warfare — air, land and sea — there’s now this fourth element: cyber. The implications of that are huge, and she’s representing that in the movie. We also have Tommy Lee Jones in the movie, and he’s kind of representing the analog CIA in the way the old guard thinks. Those two go head to head quite a bit. Introducing those two new characters, I think, is probably one of the biggest trailblazing things we’ve done in this movie.

JASON BOURNE

I really like the idea of cyber warfare being brought into the mix and although it might not seem the most action packed of scenarios to bring to the film, it certainly will make the story, all the more relevant to what we experience today and I’m sure this will add to the tension in the film. It’s still early days, but it’s good to have Damon and director Paul Greengrass back behind the franchise and I have no doubt that they can deliver on the goods of the earlier trilogy.

I do feel for Jeremy Renner, its not that he was bad in the last film, Bourne Legacy, it’s tough to  be a lead in film that is named after and heavily about another character and you kind of knew he was always going to play a second fiddle to Jason Bourne if they were to continue with the franchise. And they now chose to continue without his character entirely.

Jason Bourne opens July 29th, and also stars Vincent Cassel and Riz Ahmed.
