Matt Damon talks BOURNE 5 plot

Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne – one of the trinity of JB-initialed spies – is returning in the fifth, and as yet untitled, Bourne movie next year – replacing Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross from the fourth in the series, The Bourne Legacy, which he didn’t really live up to.

Damon’s been hesitant to return to the character, and in a recent interview with Buzzfeed he explained why:

We always looked at those movies as really about the Bush presidency, and so we kind of had to wait for the world to change. What does the character have to say?

So what’s changed and what does he have to say? Presumably, given the nature of the character, written on his knuckles in transferable ink. Damon, who is also one of the writers alongside director Paul Greengrass and Christopher Rouse, spoke about their inspiration for the new movie and why he feels it’s time to return:

Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world. It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock or trapped in Nick’s basement for the last few years you wouldn’t have escaped news of Edward Snowden – who notoriously blew the whistle on extensive NSA spying operations both in the US and internationally, and the ensuing fallout. Which seems like a perfect world for Bourne, the CIA assassin “created” through covert medical experimentation, to inhabit.

Production on the new movie is due to start next week, and Damon briefly mentioned some of the locations the super spy will be travelling through:

We’re starting in Greece, you know, the beginning of democracy. And the movie ends in Las Vegas, the most grotesque incarnation of….[laughs]

“FREEDOM!” I guess he was going to say, or possibly “the illusionary nature of our freedoms and the gross exploitation that those illusions enable for those controlling the show”. Or maybe he was just going to say “MATT DAMON!”.

Either way, the fifth Bourne movie is due for release on 29 July 2016 and stars Matt Damon as the titular Jason Bourne, a returning Julia Stiles, Tommy Lee Jones and Alicia Vikander.

I had no problem with Renner’s version, thought he was good. The movie was shit though.

Im not sure why there needs to be a 5th movie. The 3 movies were brilliant and ended well. Anyway if its done well like the previous 3 then im all up for it. Lets not mention that 4th movie…. was a sad one.
