Fresh off his first adventure since recovering his memories, and one that Kervyn would like to forget, Matt Damon is heading to China in The Great Wall. It’s a visually stunning fantasy-action movie in which Damon leads a group of mercenaries in defense of humanity atop one of the new seven wonders of the world; and is also the English-language debut of Chinese director Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers).

The official synopsis is as follows:

The Great Wall tells the story of an elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure.

Well that wasn’t particularly descriptive, so let’s take a look at the trailer and hope it tells us a bit more:

Well that didn’t tell us much, but holy hell did it show us! The movie looks absolutely beautiful, and that isn’t much of a surprise given what we’ve come to expect from Zhang’s work. I’m also reasonably sure those weren’t the Mongol hordes they were defending against.

This looks like it might be be something special to watch given Zhang’s visual flair, excellent talent in front of the camera, and a story by ‘World War Z”s Max Brooks.

What do you think?

The Great Wall is due for release in the US on 17 February 2017. Directed by Zhang Yimou and based on the story by Max Brooks (World War Z), with the screenplay by Tony Gilroy (The Bourne series), it stars Matt Damon, Willem Dafoe, Pedro Pascal, Andy Lau, Tian Jing, Eddie Peng, Numan Acar and Lu Han.
