Rise of the Planet of the Apes sneaked up on movie audiences like a gorilla in the mist. It looked doom to fail, but instead turned out to be one of the best films of 2012. A huge component of that success was due to then relatively unknown director Rupert Wyatt, so when news came that he wouldn’t be returning for the sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes many fans were bummed. Enter Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In) as the new director, who has apparently done such great work with the film, that 20th Century Fox want him back for another.

Based on how insanely good the first trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes looked, we should have suspected some positive feedback, but that was just a trailer, which often times, like a strategically cropped MySpace profile photo,  is not at all a true reflection of the final product. But according to Deadline, Reeves recently screened his final cut of the fully completed film to Fox execs and I’m guessing that they’re supremely happy with what they saw as they signed him up immediately for the still-untitled third film in the franchise.

What’s more, he won’t just be sitting pretty in the director’s chair but will also be helping to pen the script with Mark Bomback (The Wolverine), one of the writers of Dawn, while writing duo Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, who kickstarted this new franchise and wrote the second film, will no longer be returning for its third and possibly final installment.

It is believed that Reeves will be going into production on the third film immediately, as Fox expects the second to do big business much like its $482 million grossing predecessor, and wants this to be a priority.

And just to get your blood pumping for the second film, which releases on July 11, 2014, here’s that chilling trailer again.
