Matthew Vaughn talks possible KINGSMAN sequel and the return of Colin Firth

I was really worried about Kingsman: The Secret Service. Despite my glowing endorsement joining all the incredibly positive buzz for the film, there was a genuine fear that film, an ultra-violent balls-to-the-wall bit of superspy escapism, would flop horribly at the box office, seeing as it was opening against steamy juggernaut Fifty Shades of Grey.

But what looked like a huge mistake turned out to be crafty decision-making as audiences who were either turned off by Fifty Shades‘ questionable softcore porn theatrics or pretty flaccid review scores seeked out an alternative bit of entertainment, resulting in Kingsman already having made it’s $81 million budget back with some change on its first 3 days on circuit. Sure, when you factor in advertising costs that probably doesn’t even come remotely close to breaking even, but at least now there’s a possibility that it will end up successful enough to warrant another film. Writer-director Matthew Vaughn hopes so too as he explained to Moviefone he has already started thinking about where the story should go next: America.

“I’d love to do another one. This movie really is the origin story of Eggsy (Taron Egerton). And Eggsy is really the real, true modern gentleman spy. It really isn’t Harry Hart (Colin Firth). Harry Hart is the old cliché of what you think a gentleman spy is. Eggsy will be taking on a whole new way. But it’s up to the audience. If they go see it and want another one, I would absolutely love to do it. We had so much fun making this movie. And you wouldn’t believe what we’ve got in store.”

“Poor Mark Strong (aka Merlin) will be going on a journey that he never imagined. And we’ve got this idea to introduce the world to the American branch of the Kingsman.”

American Kingsman should definitely make for a different dynamic, as the ones we’ve already met were so very British. Egerton’s Eggsy, having been handed the torch, so to speak, by Firth’s Hart, trying to fit in with the Yanks should make for a fun time. And speaking to USA Today Vaughn explained that a sequel would definitely focus on Eggsy.

“The sequel will be ‘This is the modern-day gentleman spy.’ Because Harry isn’t. Harry even says, ‘There is a reason why we’ve developed weak chins.’ He said that meaning, ‘Look at us, we need to get new blood into this system,’ and that’s what Eggsy is. I joke that we’ve made the prequel to the Eggsy movie.”

Whether Eggsy is the star or not of a possible sequel, what I’m most intrigued by in Vaughn’s earlier quote though is his claim that we “wouldn’t believe what we’ve got in store,” especially since the movie already hit so many extremely high marks. But it could just be that Vaughn is not referring to something that they have in store, but rather someone. Now this is where I have to throw up a massive SPOILER WARNING to anybody that hasn’t seen the film yet. They shouldn’t really be reading this article to begin with, but lets just give them time to clear out. For the rest of you, scroll down past the James Bond throwback poster to read further.

Easily the film’s biggest highlight is Colin Firth’s complete annihilation of a Church full of nutjobs in what is thus far the best action sequence of the year. After the mind-controlled Firth is done violently massacring everybody in sight, he confronts Samuel L. Jackson’s villainous Valentine, who promptly shoots him in the face, killing him. It’s a big shocking moment, especially since Hart is sort of the film’s biggest hero, with Firth being its biggest billing. And the decision to kill him off two-thirds of the way through the movie was not made lightly, as Vaughn told Empire.

“It was a big decision, but you have to make a decision that’s right for the movie. I’m sure George Lucas had people saying, “Are you sure we want to kill off Alec Guinness in Star Wars?'”

Of course, Alec Guinness’ Obi-Wan Kenobi eventually came back. And while he probably won’t be a Force Ghost, there’s a chance that Firth’s Hart might just pull off the same death-defying act.

“A lot of people are very upset that Colin might not be in the sequel but I’m coming up with ideas at the moment. If people buy tickets in America, I’ve got a feeling we’ll figure out a way for having Colin back.”

Some of those ideas would be to have him “reincarnated as a talking mouse” or have Kingsman 2 open in sauna “and the sauna door opens and out comes Colin. It was all a dream!” Those are of course all jokes, in case you just got really worried that Vaughn had lost his marbles.

The solution to Firth’s resurrection will more than likely be a lot more mundane, with the first film already laying the groundwork as we only see Hart being shot from a distance, with there (intentionally?) never being a close-up of his corpse nor is he referred to again. With all the secret superspy tech at his disposal, it’s entirely plausible that he survived somehow and was merely in recovery as the rest of the action played out.

Honestly though, as much as I loved Firth in the role – and I really, really did – I’m not sure how I would feel about him returning. On the one hand, his death was kind of necessary as a heroic redemption for him killing all those “innocent” people, and I also wouldn’t want to see him play the mentor role again as it’s not needed any longer with Egerton’s Eggsy really coming into his own as hero himself. But on the other hand, the world is in desperate need of more badass killing machine Colin Firth!

If I were writing it, I would have Eggsy flying solo for most of the film, with his mission perhaps leading him to rescue some unknown target who turns out to be Harry Hart, back from the dead. But I’m not writing it, so this could go either way. What do you guys think? Do you want another Kingsman movie, and if so, do you want Colin Firth to return? Sound off below!

  1. They could resurrect him. As for American Kingsman – obviously this is going to have to be Kevin Costner.
