If you never read Agatha Christie’s classic Murder on the Orient Express or watch Sidney Lumet’s 1974 excellent film adaptation, what is wrong with you? We have good news at least for all you ignorant souls with new character posters that have been released for the new film adaptation that is coming out and is directed by/starring Kenneth Branagh. For a film that is all about the hidden mystery and intrigue surrounding each of its main characters, that’s a good thing.

Murder on the Orient Express is pretty much the perfect murder mystery story and tells the tale of a train journey on the glamorous Orient Express train line. The story is set in the 1930s and focuses on a murder that takes place during the titular journey, in the middle of a heavy blizzard. Christie’s recurring character of Hercule Poirot is onboard the train at the time and is tasked with solving the mystery of the murder. As the storm intensifies, clues appear to be everywhere and everyone is a suspect. The story sets up its characters perfectly because almost every suspect has good and bad qualities that makes you doubt their intentions. It’s a story that despite being written in 1934, remains fresh and exciting to this day.

Much like the 1974 version that had an impressive cast with the likes of Sean Connery, Ingrid Bergman, and Albert Finney, so too does this new version which has tapped into an incredible cast of Hollywood greats and upcoming stars. Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Judi Dench, Penelope Cruz, and Willem Dafoe will be onboard for the journey, along with Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Josh Gad (Beauty and the Beast), and Lucy Boynton (Gypsy). I’m excited alone to watch the movie just for this cast list alone.

It’s refreshing that a movie can still be tipped as a potential blockbuster without needing to be a CGI filled action extravaganza, but based purely on the prowess of its acting cast and the obviously fantastic story from Christie. And from everything we’ve seen thus far for the film, it looks like Branagh is going to be putting his own nice touch on the story, so even those who are familiar with the source material should still be in for a treat.

Murder on the Orient Express is due for release on November 10 of this year.
