Meet the full cast of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST in these 25 new images

When it comes to upcoming superhero movies, there’s one that simply dwarfs all the others: X-Men: Days of Future Past. Yes, it may not have any Ultrons or Batmans (Batmen?), but it does have the biggest cast of superheroes ever assembled on screen. And as part of Empire magazine’s 25th year anniversary, the publication has released 25 exclusive covers, each one giving us a close, and in some cases first look at all the principal characters including one very surprising addition.

Before we get to the massive tsunami of images, I have to admit that while what we’ve seen from this film thus far has had me very excited, some of these newly unveiled costume designs are just not very good and has dampened my mood just a tad. Check out my comments below each pic to see what I mean.

The purple metal instruments of death known as the Sentinels finally make their proper on-screen debut. I like how they show the sense of scale using the technician.

Havok (Lucas Till) has enrolled in the military (hence the fatigues) as part of a Trask Industries program to study mutants, which eventually leads to the creation of the Sentinels.

Hey, it’s Travis Bickel with funny glasses! Seriously though, Toad (Evan Jonigkeit) is part of the same program as Havok.

The new, younger William Stryker (Josh Helman), previously played by both Bryan Cox and Danny Huston.
hr_X-Men-_Days_of_Future_Past_59
Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage), not only the film’s main, scheming villain, but also in possesion of a moustache any 70’s porn star would be proud of.
hr_X-Men-_Days_of_Future_Past_60
Jennifer Lawrence gets naked and blue again as Mystique, who – being caught between Xavier and Magneto – plays a pivotal role in the movie.
hr_X-Men-_Days_of_Future_Past_61
Beast (Nicholas Hoult) appears to be properly embracing his… beastly nature this time.
hr_X-Men-_Days_of_Future_Past_62
There’s simply no other way to put this: Evan Peters’ Quicksilver costume is just plain bad. I was never expecting to see him in the light blue leotard, but this looks it was thrown together in a few minutes from stuff they found lying on the studio lot.
hr_X-Men-_Days_of_Future_Past_63
I still think that there’s something missing on Michael Fassbender’s Magneto costume. The arms and legs are too bare, and don’t match up with the armoured torso. That helmet is tops though.
hr_X-Men-_Days_of_Future_Past_64
Oh hello there, 1970’s Charles Xavier (James McAvoy). You’re looking very casuaLWAIT HOW ARE YOU WALKING?!
DAT VEIN!
DAT VEIN!

It’s not only the cast that gets their time in the spotlight, director Bryan Singer also features.
hr_X-Men-_Days_of_Future_Past_67
I must admit, while I’m not a fan of how Singer seems to be going back to the dark leather outfits of his earlier films, and abandoning the colorful comic bookiness of Matthew Vaughn’s First Class, there is something about this future Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) costume that I like.
hr_X-Men-_Days_of_Future_Past_68
Future professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) is on a rocket wheelchair, because that’s just how he rolls. Or doesn’t roll, actually.
hr_X-Men-_Days_of_Future_Past_69
Future Magneto (Ian McKellan) is seriously missing his signature red/purple duds here, but McKellan makes the Darth Vader-esque costume work much better than it should.
hr_X-Men-_Days_of_Future_Past_70
I have never been a fan of how un-Storm like Halle Berry’s costume is, and this costume is certainly not helping to change my mind. Plus, is that supposed to be her signature split cape? Because to me looks like she just got her skirt caught on her bangles.

Releasing this image of Rogue (Anna Paquin) is a strange decision, seeing as how Bryan Singer has revealed recently that Paquin’s only scene in the film – a single action sequence – has been cut from the film. That being said, she has certainly grown into the role and really looks the part now.
I am really not feeling Boo Boo Stewart as Warpath here. He's just not big and muscular enough and the costume is far too dark. Plus, Since when can he fly, Empire?
I am really not feeling Boo Boo Stewart as Warpath here. He’s not big enough and the costume is far too dark, with the native American influences seemingly just tacked on at the end. Plus, Since when can he fly, Empire?
hr_X-Men-_Days_of_Future_Past_73
Yep, that is definitely Ellen Page in a leather jacket.
hr_X-Men-_Days_of_Future_Past_74
This is a massive stuff-up, if you ask me. Sunspot has one of the most unique and easily recognisable visual looks in comics, and instead, what Adan Canto is giving us here, is just another random character with energy powers in a band jacket.
hr_X-Men-_Days_of_Future_Past_75
While Singer and co may have dropped the ball on some of the new cast members, Bingbing Fan’s costume for the teleporting mutant Blink is one they nail 100%. I also love the touch of the portal in the background linking to Warpath.
hr_X-Men-_Days_of_Future_Past_76
Maybe one day we’ll see Shawn Ashmore’s Iceman actually ice up. Today will not be that day. As a consolation prize, he now gets facial hair. Yay.
hr_X-Men-_Days_of_Future_Past_77
Bishop (Omar Sy) has had some of the worst costumes in X-Men comic history, but here they get it mostly right. It’s a lot – a lot – more low-tech than I expected, but Sy looks the part completely.
hr_X-Men-_Days_of_Future_Past_78
Daniel Cudmore’s Colossus looks great here. His signature metal skin translates very well to screen, although I would have liked just a little more embellishment on his costume.
hr_X-Men-_Days_of_Future_Past_79
And the big surprise I was talking about! This is apparently what the Sentinels in the future timeline (which we will be introduced to early in the movie) will look like, and its a major departure from anything we’ve yet seen in the movies, and even the comics. Apparently though, their radical redesign is tied into exactly what they’re made of and how they work. Just what that is though, is a mystery for now.

So what do you guys think of these costumes? Personally, I am concerned a bit that Singer seems to be taking a step back in costume design. Understandably, half of the costumes are supposed to be continuations of the looks established in his original trilogy, but when it comes to comic book movies we have long since moved past having to tone everything down. Modern audiences have no problem accepting and even embracing on-screen characters who are as bright and impossibly garbed as their comic book counterparts, and in fact expect it now. This rather boring homogenization of character/costume design takes away one of comic books’ strongest selling points, and I can’t help but wonder if this approach would still have been adopted had Matthew Vaughn not dropped out of directing.

X-Men: Days of Future Past will be time-sliding into cinemas on May 23, 2014, and stars *deep breath* Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, James Avoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Halley Berry, Nicholas Hoult, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Peter Dinklage, Omar Sy, Daniel Cudmore, Fan Bingbing, Boo Boo Stewart, Adan Canto, Evan Peters, Josh Helman, Lucas Till and Evan Jonigkeit.

Wow, last sentinel looks awesome, sure it’s something to do with nanotech type stuff. Some of the costumes are just plain terrible though.

Ellen Page may complain that the magazine used her likeness.

That last sentinel reminds me of the robot that attacked Thor.

One could give Ian McKellan a tutu to wear and he’d rock it like a boss!

As with some of the other costumes, I’m pretty sure they’ll save the best reveals (Sunspot/Iceman etc)for the film itself. They were probably commissioned for X amount of photos from the film for these covers, so they had to put Rogue in… OR Singer did a massive troll move and is saving her to be badass later (please?)…

I’m a little confused with Wolverine at the moment though…

    —spoilers—

So he lost his claws in the present timeline and gained bone claws correct? so then why does he have bone claws in what I can only deduce is the “First Class 2” timeline Wolverine[before Origins etc]? Is he going to lose his claws again..? or is that just a mess up? One could justify having claws in the future due to technology/magneto/whatever… guess we’ll just have to wait and see…

First Class technically takes place before he has the adamantium bonded to his bones, hence the bone claws. He gains the adamantium (shown in X-Men 2) then loses it in The Wolverine. Sometime after that he somehow gets it back again, in time for the far future timeline. Make sense?

That is exactly how I figured it so I concur. Also we know that they know where they can get more adamantium and could easily get his claws re-coated.

ah yeah… somehow I assumed it’d be after origins. This should be an interesting wolverine I think.
