The Cars films has to be my least favourite of Pixar’s works, but kids tend to love them and they made a fair amount of dosh for the animation studio. Also, to quote the great and wise Yoghurt: “MERCHANDISING!” And that’s something Pixar’s new paymasters, Disney, certainly will not pass on, hence Planes.

We’ve already seen the announcement of comedian/actor Dane Cook in the lead role of Dusty, the cropdusting plane that wants to become a racer, but now it’s time to meet his plane friends.

I hope you’re a fan of names, because here comes a whole spruce goose-load of them, starting with Top Gun actors Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards appropriately cast as fighter planes Bravo and Echo, Stacy Keach as Skipper, Cedric the Entertainer as Leadbottom,  Teri Hatcher as Dottie, Brad Garrett as Chug, Roger Craig Smith as Ripslinger, Gabriel Iglesias as Ned and Zed, Carlos Alazraqui as El Chupacabra, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Rochelle, John Cleese as Bulldog, Priyanka Chopra as Ishani, Sinbad as Roper and ESPN sportscaster Colin Cowherd  as sports-announcing blimp Colin Cowling.

And to put slightly creepy animated faces to those names, here’s a look at all of their characters courtesy of USA Today

The all-new story offers an exciting cast of characters and centers on cropduster Dusty’s high-flying dream of becoming a racer. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing, so he turns to a seasoned naval aviator who helps him qualify to take on the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar.

Planes will be flying into cinemas (and probably a McDonalds Happy Meal) in 3D on August 9, 2013.
