Forget Winter, the Phoenix is coming – along with a muddy boy and deceased pop star – and it’s going to get apocalyptic. Yes, after months of casting rumours and short lists that were actually quite long, director Bryan Singer took to Twitter to unveil that Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones), Tye Sheridan (Mud, The Tree of Life) and Alexandra Shipp (Lifetime’s Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B) will play the young versions of Jean Grey, Scott Summers aka Cyclops and Ororo Munroe aka Storm respectively in the 1980’s set X-Men: Apocalypse.

Out of the three Turner is easily the most well-known due to her role as Sansa Stark on HBO’s Game of Thrones – a role which saw her play everything from lovestruck teenager to tortured wife to (most recently) scheming power player. As the troubled telepath Jean Grey, she will certainly have to pull on a bit of all of that. The 19-year old Sheridan has been quickly making a name for himself working with such auteurs as Jeff Nichols and Terrence Mallick, for whom he has turned in a string of solid performances. He’s never done anything quite as mainstream as X-Men though, and as the future leader of the titular group, this will certainly put him on a bunch of people’s radars. Shipp is easily the least well known of the trio, with her only real claim to fame being playing late pop singer Aaliyah in Lifetime’s made-for-TV biopic. The movie may have received lots of criticism from Aaliyah’s family and supporters, but Shipp’s performance was apparently not one of those reasons for concern. And beside, can she really be a worse Storm than Halle Berry?

The trio of young actors will be joining James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Erik Magnus aka Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy aka Beast, Evan Peters as Peter Maximoff aka Quicksilver, Hugh Jackman as Logan aka Wolverine and introducing Channing Tatum as Remy Labeau aka Gambit and Oscar Isaac as the titular baddie Apocalypse. You may have noticed no Patrick Stewart or Ian McKellen as the older Xavier and Magneto, and that’s because despite playing such a prominent role in X-Men: Days of Future Past, the elder statesmen of the franchise will not be returning for what is being billed as the conclusion of a trilogy that began with the 1970’s set X-Men: First Class.

X-Men: Apocalypse was produced/scripted by franchise regular Simon Kinberg and is set to be released on May 27, 2016. Shooting is expected to commence in Montreal, Canada this April.

So we will never see a “young” Wolverine, unless they go back to the 1880 or something?

“can she really be a worse Storm than Halle Berry” – I don’t think even Darryn over at LG can be worse than Halle Berry…

Channing Tatum as Remy Labeau aka Gambit – this will be a good test to see if he truly fits the roll before going solo.
