Mel Gibson may find a Machete in his near future

You’ve got to love Mel Gibson lately. He’s been desperate to restart his career, with new roles and projects, but every time he earns back a little bit of respect, he quickly manages to piss it all away in some bizarre stunt or rant.

Clearly, the man has more crazy than blood flowing through his veins right now. And while a number of doors have closed on him, including a chance to make a Judah Maccabee film, leaving us lovers of potential puns saddened, someone still wants to work with him.

And that someone is Robert “Machete” Rodriguez.

Rodriguez is currently filming a sequel to his original Machete film, starring the geriatric federale Danny Trejo, as he looks to take down a black market arms dealer before he can do explosivey things to democracy and Mexico.

Rodriguez has managed to round up the remainder of the cast who didn’t bite the blade in the first film, and his eyes set on recruting Gibson and Michelle Williams for Machete Kills.

The original film was also co-directed with Rodriguez by Ethan Maniquis, although this time, Rodriguez may do the whole film himself this time. “Currently I am directing it,” Rodriguez told the Hollywood Reporter.

But we’re checking to see if there’s going to be the need for another director if I have to go off and do Sin City 2. I wasn’t sure what the timing on Sin City was or if I would have to step off to do Sin City at a certain point, depending on when Machete went.

But Machete looks like it’s going to go pretty quickly so it’s possible that I will direct the whole thing.

This might be yet another shot at relevance for Gibson, with his latest film, Get the Gringo, skipping cinemas entirely, and going to straight to pay-per-view and DVD, instead of US theatre screens.

Shame, that will be a bit of a fall for Gibson. Has his career gone the way of Val Kilmer?
