If you’re a fan of Transformers, then good news: There’ll be a lot more than meets the eye in the near future. A new cartoon, a new film and plenty of new toys. But first, we’ve got to get to the next chapter in the franchise. A chapter that has some details to share.

Transformers 5 (1)

So why are Optimus Prime and his fellow Autobots being hunted down by their former allies? Turns out that levelling Chicago in Transformers: Dark Of The Moon, threatening to enslave humanity and making audiences put up with three entire movies of Shia LaBeouf is reason enough to kill all Transformers. Good or bad. That’s how director Michael Bay explained the situation to EW:

[The government] wants to wipe out all the Transformers, all the Autobots. Optimus has lost all faith in humankind, and I’m trying to convince him there is still good in the world and we need to work together.

Naturally, Optimus Prime’s mindset is in a different place, as Bay baysplained.

He’s done good for earth, and he’s been fucked over.

As a result of that little bit of backstabbing, Bay promises, that we’ll see “angry Optimus Prime.” There’ll also be some new Transformers, just in time for marketing and mass toy releases. One of the new additions to the franchise is Lockdown, a bounty hunter who turns into a Lamborghini Aventador. And as Bay explained, he’s loyal to neither side of the Transformers:

Transformers 5 (4)

Lockdown is an interesting character. He travels the galaxy, he works for somebody else. And he’s here for one person, one alien, and then he’s out of here. So he doesn’t really want to take sides. The cause and balance of the galaxy is kind of messed up when different species play with different species. And that opens up a whole other gigantic world for Transformers.

And don’t forget Grimlock? As ridiculous as it sounds, he’s a massive dinosaur Transformer who according to EW, is “150 feet long from tail to nostrils, 63.5 feet tall from the ground to the top of his horns, and weigh 850 tons.” Plus he can breathe fire in the movie. I don’t know what Bay is smoking, but I want a hit of that stufff because Grimlock clearly sounds awesome. Just don’t expect Bay to give away any other details on Grimlock before the film is out:

I like to keep things very much in the dark. But yes, you’ll understand why they’re there when you see the movie. If you think I’m supposed to give away a lot of story points? No way! Keep it secret.

In fact, there’ll be plenty of secrets in Age of Extinction. Secrets that will be revealed in future films in the new trilogy:

Lockdown’s ship has a lot of meaning that can go into other movies. There’s a lot of backstory about that ship that’s not laid out here. You’re going to see a few things where you’re like ‘What is that? And what is that?’ And you’re going to see a couple shots like, ‘Wait a minute, who are they?’ But we don’t answer those questions.

Transformers 4 will be roll out on June 27.
