Have you read my Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare review yet? I am genuinely surprised by how much I like the game. At the review event, I got the chance to chat to Michael Condrey, co-founder of Sledgehammer Games. Apparently, all the technology seen in-game is not too far from reality. They’ve researched it all, and it’s all science.
Interestingly enough, the team chatted to Philip Ivey, the Production Designer for District 9. They wanted to make a Call of Duty game that was set in the future, but that didn’t come across as being science fiction. Ivey advised them to make use of identifiable scenarios, locations, and technology that people could accept was real. Thinking on it now, District 9 does have the sci-fi touch, yet, it still feels entirely believable. The same could be said for Advanced Warfare. I never once thought that the game was completely unrealistic.
According to Michael, if you can do it and you can play with it in-game, that technology already exists. Exosuits, augmented reality, rail guns… if they’re not working today, they certainly will be in future. It’s kind of scary actually, apparently this sort of tech is much closer than we think it is.
One of my biggest concerns is that die-hard Call of Duty fans will be left behind, not enjoying the game and all the new changes. I asked Michael about it, and he compared this futuristic step to that of Modern Warfare. Back then, it took the series away from the conventional World War II setting, and fans really loved it.
Personally, I think Advanced Warfare has taken a step in the right direction. I can’t imagine a future Call of Duty title NOT having this new kind of movement or technology. What do you think though? Is the game too different… too unrealistic? Will you be playing it?

Rubbish. Why does Kevin Spacey still look so young then? Did they make him in the same lab they made Cruy-Cruy?

He is probably thinking how to reduce the polygon count on that head without telling his coders to cover it up with a beanie 😛

If only that science meant a new gaming engine and not a engine from 1999.

of cause they made the exo suits vulnerable to EMP, when no electronic military equipment is allow in the field until it tested and prove that it can stand up to a emp blast. The UK MOD has an entire facility and team of engineers devoted to making sure their equipment is immune to EMP, it always make me laugh when we see emp dropping military planes out of the sky, like Godzilla for example.

The enemies in mechs only go down for like a second when confronted with an emp grenade 🙂 as far as I could tell, enemies wearing exosuits were not affected at all.

Which goes again the science of emp blasts and how they affect electronics, once electronics are affected by a emp their no magic button that will reboot it and make it all work like nothing happen, they have to be rebuilt or replace completely.
Not that I’m moaning against this mechanic and name it emp, I will be using it in one of my games if I ever get around to building it but to claim that anywhere near being scientifically accurate is wrong.

No, I think he meant scientific to the point that sort of technology exists 🙂 not necessarily that it acts identically in reality 😛
