Michael Mann to make a prequel for HEAT – as a book

Heat is a movie that doesn’t really need a prequel, but it might be getting one anyway. The 1995 crime thriller directed by Michael Mann was  great film and was famous for putting two screen legends Robert de Niro and Al Pacino opposite each other for the first time in film history (side note for film geeks – they starred in another movie together beforehand, but never shared screen time). It was a great and suspenseful films, that while perhaps not living up to the strength of its incredible cast, is still seen as one of the better crime films of its era and had some truly memorable scenes.

The film started with a lot of characters who are older and well established in their roles, so although the film doesn’t really need any further follow-up as it works well on its own, it makes sense that they can fit a prequel into its chronology. And that is exactly what Michael Mann is looking to do – except for now, only as a novel.

Michael Mann has closed a deal to launch a set of Michael Mann books, which will see him collaborate with other writers to bring some story ideas that he has to life and one of those stories that he wants to bring together is an origin story for his much loved characters from the film detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino), criminal Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro), Chris Shihirles (Val Kilmer), Nate (Jon Voight), and other characters featured in the film.

Heat spent a long time in development by Mann, over a decade putting the story together and reworking some of LA Takedown to make the movie, so probably has a lot of material to follow up on and the characters are certainly interesting enough to warrant it. Whether this is something fans would want, especially in book format is something else. Personally, I like the idea of a book, as it gives true fans the opportunity to dig deeper into the origin of the characters ,while those who feel completely satisfied with the story told in the original film can live in peace seeing it as a complete cinematic experience.

Why do you think of the idea – would you read a story based on these popular characters?
