Microsoft’s WP7 Team welcomes Geohot and friends on their platform

Geohot, the guy who hacked the iPhone and most recently the PS3 has found an unlikely ally in their fight to hack anything they can find.

Just moments after Geohot mentioned that they are planning on going out to get a Windows Phone 7 to try and hack they received a tweet from Brandon Watson, Director of the Windows Phone 7 team welcoming them to the platform and donating a brand new WP7 to them so that they can get started right away.

It’s an obvious cheap shot against the iPhone but it’s a good one so good on them.

I just hope for their sake that Geohot doesn’t crack it wide open and destroy any chance they had of ever making money from their app store.

What makes you think he won’t?

How is it any different to the iPhone App Store though? I mean you can get pretty much any app for free yet Apple still makes boat loads of money?

Well the difference is that he could make all the paid apps free… which is obviously then piracy and bad.

But if he just used his obvious talent to actually help then that would be awesome. but since we are all allowed to code for the WP7 anyway I don’t see what homebrew he could possibly make

This confuses me a little. If we are allowed to produce homebrew apps for the WP7 then what purpose does geohot and his team have to jail break the device? With his PS3 hack his claim was it was to allow for homebrew development on the console. So what other reason other than piracy would he have to hack the WP7?

iPhone paid apps can be free as well. There is a Cydia app which allows you to download any games for free.

I’m guessing Microsoft will probably see what he is capable of and hire him ala Kevin Mitnick.

I don’t think MS would be acting so cute had Geohot cracked open the Xbox in a similar manor.

But the Xbox has been cracked open for years now dude. Why would Geohot do that again?

You still need to chip it, as far as I know? There isn’t a way to just “remove” any form of copy-protection like there is with GeoHots release.

True, but I was merely pointing out that it’s not necessary for him to mod the xbox as it’s already been done 😛

M$ is merely trying to capitalise on the current jailbreaking saga (both Apple and Sony’s recent problems with hackers), by portraying itself to be the “company for the masses” (even sympathetic to hackers) and to score a cheap hit for their WP7. After all, there’s no such thing as bad publicity, and the WP7 certainly needs all the exposure it can get.

The irony however, is that you could read more into this, especially M$’s shaky history when it comes to their OSs being easily hacked. Granted of course, it’s not merely a case of M$s goods being badly programmed then being more in the crosshairs of hackers, and thus on average more likely to be hacked. Should we read into this that M$ wants its software (on all systems) to be exploited? Is that why I have to run an antivirus and firewall apps, because M$ is cosy with hackers, exploiters and script kiddies?

    Food for thought!
