Midweek Movie Mouth-Off: are we ever going to get a good video game movie?

So the early reviews for Warcraft are in and… well… it’s not looking too good. While the movie might be pretty, it sucks pretty much everywhere else. Which is a major disappointment, after the extensive marketing campaign and all the amazing trailers, we still end up with a terribly lacklustre movie. So everyone that pinned their hopes on Warcraft to be the film that breaks the bad video game movie curse, you’re out of luck.

Which begs the question, are we ever going to get a good video game movie. Sure, there have been some that haven’t been too awful, and there have been some that fall squarely in the so-bad-it’s-good camp, but are we going to get one that is genuinely good? All I want is a movie based on a video game that is solid, entertaining, well put together with a good cast, genuine dialogue, and can stand independently as a really good movie. It doesn’t have to be a big budget spectacle, it just needs to have enough budget to bring the material to life on screen as we want to see it. Is that too much to ask? Apparently so.

At least we still have Assassin’s Creed to look forward to, but at this point I’m feeling a little bit burnt by all these misguided video game movies. What do you think?
