Midweek Movie Mouth-Off: review scores for major franchises: do they change your mind?

The embargo on US reviews for X-Men: Apocalypse lifted yesterday, and like Kervyn pointed out, it’s a miXed bag (bonus points for the X joke there). So far most critics agree that it’s pretty… meh. Apocalypse is a lot of “been-there-done-that”. There are some high points, for sure, and a lot of low points, but the whole doesn’t seem to be greater than the sum of its parts.

Which begs the interesting question, with a generally negative consensus coming out of the American critics, will the reviews sway you away from watching it regardless? This isn’t some once-off movie after all, nor is it a movie that you’ve heard nothing about and have nothing else to go on. It’s part of a large, well-established franchise. Personally, I’ll be listening to the reviews, because they reflect how I feel about the X-Men movies in general. I didn’t like First Class and didn’t even watch Days of Future Past, so it’s safe to say that the reviews have convinced me I needn’t bother with this one either. On the other hand, despite generally awful reviews and a dire 27% on Rotten Tomatoes, some people still really loved Batman V Superman.

But, if you’ve enjoyed the X-Men movies so far, I’d be interested to hear what you think about reviews. Are you flexible enough to take heed of the critics’ warnings and stay away from the cinema? Or are you determined not to be swayed away from watching the conclusion of a trilogy, regardless of what people might say?

Honestly, I don’t even read the reviews – especially when it comes to comic book movies because many fall victim to rampant fanboyism, be it positive or negative. At most I’ll skim through impressions just to get an overall sense of what I’m letting myself in for when watching it, because I will watch it because I enjoy watching comic book movies.

And sometimes I’ll agree, yip that movie was bad as everyone said it was, other times I’ll be quite entertained & wonder if they watched the same movie.

I’m not too fussed by review scores. If it’s something I wanna watch, then regardless of how bad or good critics say, doesn’t really make much of a difference. I do tend to stay away from reviews in general, even if it’s a spoiler free one.

It all comes down to one rule….”Take everything on the internet with a pinch of salt”.

I ended up enjoying Pixels, Mortdecai and a hos to other movies. I still think The Lego Movie ought to be shot in the head. So I generally ignore reviews.
