There are many sub-genres that are encompassed by the “scary movie” label. There are cross-overs between them, and movies that can be both, but for the sake of simplicity let’s narrow it down to two. You have gore-fests like Hostel or Saw which are all about the blood, guts and torture. On the other hand, you have more cerebral-centred mind-f*** movies like The Others and The Woman in Black.
While all the gore might turn my stomach and still manage to give me nightmares, I’d say I’m infinitely more scared of movies where the danger is just out of sight. Where freaky things happen and you can’t tell what’s behind it all. There’s nothing to look out for but a shadow on the wall that moves when it shouldn’t.
So, what do you prefer to get your adrenalin pumping? Is it the dark and twisted thriller, or is it the blood-soaked horror?
P.S. no matter what your perfect horror movie might contain, if you like scary movies in general then you don’t want to miss out on our latest giveaway. If you live in Cape Town, and you want to win a set of double tickets to a pre-screening of Annabelle, click here for all the details.

I have to say it’s the idea of something lurking in the shadows. There was a movie, I forget its name, that had just that. Can’t remember the name now, though it had 2 endings…

I was going to say the final LOTR movie, but remember it had far more than 2 endings.

I’d rather watch NEITHER. I hate jump scares & gore doesn’t impress me – I play violent video games.

Yes, this I agree with! I’d rather not watch any scary movies. That’s why I’m glad the Annabelle giveaway is in Cape Town, as the Joburg representative of TheMovies I have a rock-solid excuse not to go!

Jump scares. EVERY SINGLE TIME. I’m like “Pfft, this won’t scare me” and the next moment I’m quivering behind my couch.

I loved The Others and The Woman in Black. You don’t need a petrol truck full of blood to be scary. Who wants to play the clap game?
