Midweek Movie Mouth-Off: what’s your ideal video game movie?

Kervyn’s list of Top 10 Video Game Movies got me thinking: while video-game-to-movie adaptations aren’t easy, there have been some that are part-way decent. And, God bless Hollywood, they’re going to keep trying until they eventually get it right.

In terms of upcoming video game movies, we have Agent 47 hitting our screens in September, and Assassin’s Creed and Warcraft are on the cards for 2016. Also currently in the works are movies based on Splinter Cell, Metal Gear Solid, heck even Minecraft. We’ve also got Uncharted that’s probably still on (even though it recently lost its director), Bad Robot have the film rights to Portal and Half Life (or so we heard in 2013), and Sam Raimi has been linked to an adaptation of The Last of Us (but they plan on changing quite a bit).

Even with all those already listed, there are still plenty of games to choose from. Wouldn’t you like to see an epic Mass Effect space opera – like Star Trek, but done right? How about Heavy Rain as a big screen thriller directed by David Fincher? Or maybe you’d like to see God of War as a cheesy action movie – starring Vin Diesel of course (who else?).

So working with the assumption that they won’t completely screw it up, which game would you love to see on the silver screen?

But I thought most games were cinematic already, what with 30fps and all that? Kidding!

Max Payne 3 would be cool, without Marky Mark though.

But sometimes I also think they shouldn’t tell the game’s story in a movie, use the universe created for the game & tell their own that fits inside it. Half the work surrounding backstory & lore is already done.

Do not touch Mass Effect! Or at least stay clear of Shepards story. Maybe something about the first contact war or maybe that comic they did about Liara trying to find Shepards body after the Normandy went down.

I want to see an epic, mature sci-fi trilogy set in the Mass Effect universe directed by Duncan Jones (Moon) or Rian Johnson (Looper). There’s so much mythology to delve into that they don’t have to even touch Shepard’s story and still deliver one massive sprawling tale.

Hell flippin’ yeah! My thoughts precisely – leave the Shepard alone… But they have PLENTY of great material to work with (could even rival Star Wars in the long-run, if done right).
