Luke Cage is releasing this September on Netflix, but there is still little known about what fans can expect from the show. We obviously know from the comics that the story will revolve around the titular strongman who goes around fighting crime in the streets of Harlem, New York and that there will be a host of characters dropping in – likely from the other Marvel series such as Jessica Jones and Daredevil. Luke was already a big part of the Jessica Jones series, so it’s inevitable they will be syncing up characters between the two series.
However, thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we can now give you a run-down of what to possible expect from the series. EW spoke with the lead actor Mike Colter and he was gracious enough to provide some details on what we can expect from the plot:
There are politicians and then there are shady characters that function on the other side of the law. Who does what? I won’t say, but this becomes a situation where there are a lot of people who want to help Harlem and think they have Harlem’s best interests, but, ultimately, just because they think or say they have Harlem’s best interests, sometimes they’re being very selfish or being very short-sighted. So sometimes what they’re doing is actually harming the community.
So this is where Luke comes in because Luke is a person who likes to, he observes and he listens and he takes in to account what people tell him, and he’s a pretty smart guy himself and he understands that some peoples’ way may not be the best may not be the best in the big picture so ultimately Luke has to get involved because there are a lot of things that happen, a lot of people get hurt, a lot of lives are lost and unfortunately he’s the only one who is capable of actually helping deal with this because sometimes the law enforcement is actually not the best because they’re not aware or they’re not capable, or maybe they’re corrupt. So, without getting into too many details, Luke Cage is gonna have to step up and be the man.
This is probably not enough detail to excite the fans – but hey, isn’t that what watching the series is supposed to be about anyway. They can’t give away everything.
So far, the permanent cast for the series that we do know of consists of: Simone Missick (Ray Donovan) who will be playing police detective Misty Knight, Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy) playing the criminal Shades, Frank Whaley (Pulp Fiction) playing Rafael Scarfe, Mahershala Ali (The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay) playing Cage’s archenemy Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes with Rosario Dawson reprising her role of Claire Temple, and Sonia Braga (Angel Eyes) playing Claire’s mom, Soledad. As far as tone goes, I wouldn’t expect the series to deviate too much from the formula we are used to with Jessica Jones.
