Ming-Na Wen talks AGENTS OF SHIELD

It’s going to be a couple of years until we see another Avengers movies, BUT that doesn’t mean that smaller screens will be going cold turkey on some action from that universe. Banking on that success from the film, a new series starring the further exploits of the Strategic Hazard Intelligence and Logistics Directorate is almost upon us.

Agent Son of Coal is back, alongside several other new faces that includes Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May. Here’s what the actress had to say about her character.

SHIELD (2)

“I think she definitely honors her job and she takes it very seriously. But from what I gather she has some damage, she’s like a damaged soldier. I think she’s definitely one of the more season/experienced agents in this crew,” Wen said to SFX, describing the starting state of the agent.

As for how much of an influence Avengers director Joss Whedon had on the show before he left to start work on the sequel for that blockbuster, Wen said that it would be felt throughout the first episode and beyond:

We definitely try very hard to take what he started in the writing and directing of the pilot episode, and he will be there to guide us indefinitely. He’s got an office in the S.H.I.E.L.D. building so he’ll be there. But we’re also in really good hands with his brother Jed and Maurissa, and our team they’re amazing.

I think for the die hard fans who know Joss Whedon’s work as well as the Marvel series and all the movies, I think the will have a certain expectation which we will be able to deliver as far as sense of humor, as far as the comraderie of the characters and the action. But I think the one big surprise is because it’s now been translated for television, it’s just the continuous development of these characters on a weekly basis and hopefully they’ll be able to be more invested in these characters and what happens to them.

Television is a good place to start though for these new additions to the Marvel Universe. But could they possibly appear in The Avengers 2? “I don’t know, wouldn’t that be awesome? I can always dream” Wen said. Agents of SHIELD airs later this year, and stars Clark Gregg, Brett Dalton, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge and Chloe Bennet.

Fifty? Damn those Asian genes. This does of course mean that she will probably turn into the Crypt Keeper the moment she hits 60 though.
