Good news everyone! Universal Pictures is heaving one hell of a year! Bad news for everyone who hates certain overused promotional chew-toys however, as their latest success comes from Minions, the Despicable Me spin-off which is has become a license to print money. And bananas.

Minions has now crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide at the box office, having grossed an estimated $682 million internationally and $321.9 million in North America and becoming the third-highest money-making animated film of all time. Right behind Frozen and Toy Story 3 that is. Take that, Disney.

And the good news just keeps on piling up for Universal, the distributor of Minions. They’re now three for three this year, with Minions joining both Jurassic World and Furious 7 in the $1 billion and over group. Furious 7 grossed $1.512 billion and Jurassic World has grossed $1.628 billion so far. These hits have propelled Universal into becoming the most successful studio in 2015 by far, breaking several all-time records along the way.

Minions meanwhile, still has more markets to open up in, so expect those coffers to bulge even more. Out of the Despicable Me movies released so far, Minions clearly stands at the top when compared to the original two flicks. Despicable Me made $543 million in 2010, while the sequel increased those gains to $970.7 million in 2013.

So yeah, expect to see more the little yellow bastards in the near future, while I weep at the lack of a proper sequel to Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
