Peter Berg hasn’t had a good time at the cinema lately. Battleship was… well about as good as a movie based on boardgame could be. So for his next gig, Berg has decided to ditch the Fong Kong Iron-Man ripoffs and leapfrogging space/aqua/whatever-the-frak-ships, and keep things a whole lot more realistic. True story realistic even, as he’s written and directed an adaptation of Marcus Lutrell’s non-fiction book, Lone Survivor.

To pull off the gritty story of courage under fire, he’s rounded up a nice little cast, led by Mark Wahlberg, to engage in some explosive combat pyrotechnics. Also, flag-waving. Lots of flag-waving.

“Lone Survivor,” starring Mark Wahlberg, tells the story of four Navy SEALs on an ill-fated covert mission to neutralize a high-level Taliban operative when they are ambushed by enemy forces in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. Based on The New York Times bestseller, this story of heroism, courage and survival directed by Peter Berg (“Hancock,” “Friday Night Lights”) also stars Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch and Eric Bana.

The last time Berg tackled a military film – and no, just because Rihanna wore a uniform doesn’t mean that Battleship counts – was with 2007’s The Kingdom. That film may have been bogged down a little by a formulaic plot, but there’s no denying that it featured some killer combat scenes. Berg just seems to have a knack for directing the star spangled crap out of realistic military action sequences. And judging from this trailer, that seems to be the case once again.

And you really can’t fault the capabilities of the cast that Berg’s chosen to pull this off. Yes, even Taylor Kitsch. My only worry is the overwhelming feeling of schmaltz that I seem to be getting as well, but that seems to be more the problem with the trailer than the film itself. I hope.

Lone Survivor will be infiltrating your cinemas on January 10, 2014.
