Perhaps sensing that the Playstation 4 launch would steal many a customer away from cinema seats, the North American box office only saw one new notable release. A sequel to an older film, decked in holiday cheer would go head to head with the son of Odin. And it almost toppled the thunder god from his number one position.

The only new release this week was The best man holiday, a sequel to the 1999 The best man. At $30.5 million, that’s a damn good opening, and way above the starting total of the first film which made $9 million 14 years ago, or $14 million when adjusted for inflation.

The Thor sequel held strong though, keeping first place and adding another $38.5 million to it’s coffers. That brings the current global total for the Asgardian sequel up to $479.7 million, a figure which will make this one of the best years ever for Marvel movies. Here’s how everyone else did at the North American box office:

  • Thor: The Dark World – $38.5 Million
  • The best man holiday – $30.5 Million
  • Last Vegas – $8.8 Million
  • Free Birds – $8.3 Million
  • Bad Grandpa – $7.6 Million
  • Gravity – $6.28 Million
  • Ender’s Game – $6.2 Million
  • 12 years a slave – $4.7 Million
  • Captain Phillips – $4.5 Million
  • About time – $3.4 Million

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 departed the top ten this week. The animated sequel packed plenty of visual food puns, and finished off with a poor global total of just over $200 million, That should at least cover the production and marketing costs for this film, but will most likely also spell the end of this charming franchise.
