Traditionally, the Superbowl weekend is both the best and worst time for movies. It’s a good time to debut new spots and trailers for upcoming films (more on that later today), and it’s also the time of the year that sees attendance at cinemas drop for that weekend because SPERTS. Here’s how the box office did on Superbowl Sunday in North America.Ride Along claimed the top spot for the third week in a row, edging out newcomers That awkward moment and Labour Day. Despite falling 42% in terms of cash generated, Ride Along was the top draw at the end of the day, netting over $12 million. That awkward moment however, arrived in barely second place to edge Lone Survivor out for the number two spot, making this the lowest opening so far for a movie that stars Zac Effron. Jason Reitman’s latest directorial effort, Labour Day, bombed spectacularly however.

Opening to a fifth spot debut, the drama barely cleared $5 million for the weekend. Here’s how everyone else did on that lackluster weekend:

  • Ride Along – $12.3 Million
  • That Awkward Moment – $9.3 Million
  • Lone Survivor – $9 Million
  • Frozen – $7.6 Million
  • Labour Day – $7.1 Million
  • Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit – $5.4 Million
  • The Nut Job – $5.3 Million
  • American Hustle – $4.3 Million
  • I, Frankenstein – $3.55 Million
  • The Wolf of Wall Street – $3.52 Million

Top Ten departures this week include Devil’s Due and August: Osage Country. I have no idea what the latter is even about, but I do know that it made $43 million worldwide. As for Devil’s Due, that horror film scared up even less during its three week run, making just over $24 million worldwide.
