Maleficent took the box office with a wicked spell in North America, debuting over the weekend with a strong start of $70 million, easily taking the top spot. It’s the biggest ever debut for an Angelina Jolie movie, kicking the ass of similar fairy tale films such as Snow White and The Huntsman which opened on the same weekend two years ago with a $56 million splash. Arriving in third place however, Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways To Die In The West may have fired a few blanks.

Maleficent (7)

The film barely made over $17 million, a total that is far-off the mark of Ted, which earned over $54 million in June 2012 for MacFarlane. Here’s a look at how the rest of the box office did on a quiet weekend:

  • Maleficent – $70 Million
  • X-Men: Days of Future Past – $32.6 Million
  • A Million Ways To Die In The West – $17 Million
  • Godzilla – $12.2 Million
  • Blended – $8.4 Million
  • Neighbors – $7.7 Million
  • The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – $3.77 Million
  • Million Dollar Arm – $3.7 Million
  • Chef – $2 Million
  • The Other Woman – $1.4 Million

Top ten departures this week include Heaven is For Real and Rio 2. The animated sequel to the 2011 film may not have made Pixar levels of cash, but after eight weeks in the box office the film has managed to score over $450.8 million worldwide, leaving Heaven is For Real in the dust as that church flick $90 million worldwide. Still, not bad for a movie shot on a $12 million budget. Not bad at all.
