A new weekend, and two new movies! After a month of tepid performances from various flicks, the box office saw some semblance of activity again. Perfect Guy took the number one spot over the North American weekend, barely edging out M Night Shania Twain’s* The Visit which came in at second.

After numerous back to back flops, M Night Shyamalan’s The Visit was a much-needed win for the master of the twist. After The Happening, The Last Airbender and After Earth, Shyamalan’s career seemed to be in a downward spiral, but thanks to the shoestring budget of The Visit and some positive word of mouth, the film made back it’s $5 million budget and then some.

The Visit will most likely see a steep drop next week, but having already made a healthy profit in domestic sales alone, it’ll most likely be the kind of boost that Shyamalan hasn’t experienced for quite a while.

Here’s a look at how the rest of the films did in the US market:

TheVisit

  • The Perfect Guy – $26.7 Million
  • The Visit – $25.6 Million
  • War Room – $7.4 Million
  • A Walk In The Woods – $5.6 Million
  • Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation – $4.1 Million
  • Straight Outta Compton – $4 Million
  • No Escape – $2.8 Million
  • The Transporter Refuelled – $2.7 Million
  • 90 Minutes In Heaven – $2.1 Million
  • Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos – $1.9 Million

Top ten US departures this week include The Man From UNCLE. Guy Ritchie’s cold war spy flick hasn’t exactly fared well, making only $43.1 million so far, not good news at all for a movie with a $75 million budget. In terms of foreign ticket sales, the film has only managed to score up $51 million, for a combined total of $94.7 million so far. The film has yet to open up in several other foreign territories, including the lucratve Chinese market, so there might be some hope yet for it to break even.

*The Movies is contractually obligated to make at least one terrible M Night Shyamalan reference per relevant article.
